ID help.Sold as Purple Dragon

because naming corals by their scientific id is next to impossible and less appealing. and who's fault is that?

Less appealing for some, but count me in as one of those who craves knowledge of the science.

I'm fully aware of the difficulty of coral taxonomy - this is primarily due to reticulate evolution (Veron 1995) and the hybridization that takes place during multi-species spawning events.

It's also difficult b/c the majority of people want their 1" frag ID'd. Let it grow out for cryin' out loud.

I understand (sorta) your side but this isn't just a hobby, its a business for many as well

Really, it's becoming a way for people to sell a browned-out coral for 3x-4x its value, or even more.

But, my apologies to the OP - this naming spat was covered nicely in the thread link posted above.

Cheers
Mike

I understand and dont like the way it has turned out sometimes because I had a really nice deepwater frag for sale just to make money to buy more corals for myself and I had no gauging interest but when a vendor puts up a for sale thread and cries out "Lineaged piece" he sells all of them right away at a higher price and smaller size and they were the same species. as it turns out my deepwater is a different morph and will become a new tyree exclusive silent auction edition now. It is what it is.

Doesn't just happen with vendors. Lots of well known reefers get pieces tied back to them. You just really have to wow everybody with something different. Monster Mash and Pink Boobies both came from different friends of mine. How many great corals do we have from Copps he isn't a vendor, tubs, sanjay, greg carrols efflo, and so on.

VERY disappointed with that link based on your post leading into it. I was expecting a detailed analysis of gorilla nipple morphology and their similarity to certain zoanthids.
hahahaha. that was hilarious.

yeah, I was being impatient. Just assumed that there would be more interest since it was a mari-cultured piece which would be more rare than the one in circulation. Hopefully in a couple of weeks it will be ready for it's photo opp.

Wow lets pretend I did not say purple dragon instead the title reads "What the hell did I just buy?"

I hope these pics are better.

Well I think that is a lot of peoples reservation. Deep water balis are coming in now and increasing in volume.. Not to rain on your parade but I wouldn't be paying top dollar for a recent important mari piece frag that hasn't been in captivity for any significant time. It's not worth the risk imop and it could show up on DD tomorrow for the same price for an entire colony. Take my Tenella I just got. It's a mari plug I could have gotten 100's for a tiny frag just a few months ago if I tried to frag it and sell it but I'm sure there will be dozens more showing up soon, so it's worth what it's worth now.

If it was pure wild sure that's got 1 of a kind potential, but any mari no matter how nice could very well be populating two dozen more plugs somewhere out in the ocean, waiting to be shipped to your LFS next week.

...and if I'm going to be TRULY Honest. I'm just going to apologize right now for coming off like the dick that I feel I am about to sound like. I'm rather disappointed that Tyree would even consider making a recently imported maricultured piece an LE. Yes it's a very nice piece, and I would have gone ape-**** on DD trying to nab it before you if I saw it for sale online, but what makes it specially compared to all the other maricultured versions of the exact same coral that are getting imported right now. We've seen some AMAZING millis coming in lately do each of those get named and LE'd?
