ID Monti please! Also, polyps extended out?

Hey!
2 requests:

1. Please ID this monti as best you can. It is about 4 inches now, and it is purple with green polyps. I've had it about 6 months. Water is fine, and lights are MH.

2. It seems to be doing fine, however, the polyps seem to be extended very far out (always were) compared to pics of other monti's. Is that a problem or just the species?

It's not a monti. It looks like a Pagoda cup coral to me. That would explain why the polyps are so big. It looks like it's very happy.

That would explain a lot! Thanks!
However, I didn't realize that Pagoda cups "plate". (& that is one of the many reasons that I do not ever go back to that lfs.

There is no way anyone can accurately ID that coral to genus let alone species from those pictures.
IMO it looks like it might be an Acropora .

I realize that you cannot ID a lot corals from pics with 100% certainty, however, an educated guess is always welcome! After further referencing, however, it does closely resemble a type of plating pagoda. Thanks!

i think what he was saying is the pics are a little small for proper identification...

but i could be wrong...

good luck on the id

I agree that it is a little hard to tell by the pics. My money is on Turbinaria. "Cup corals" do plate out. Otherwise they wouldn't have the cup shape.

my thoughts exactly, matt. the pictures are shoddy, but the first impression i got was that it was a turbinaria. as for 'cup corals' plating out, i haven't seen that-- i have seen them do an odd bit of encrusting (although, the piece was WC and could have been a part of a large colony). either way, this still looks like a turbinaria to me.
