Hey everyone,

I wasn't sure where to post this or what topic to post under, so I thought I would drop it here. I've got this odd thing that seems to be trying to strangle my polyps. I've scrubbed it back once before with a toothbrush, however it's back again and I thought it time to get a ID on it and treat it properly. It's in a Qt tank as of now, and have not seen it anywhere else in my DT. It's always there, doesn't recede or go away, only grow.

Any thoughts on what it is and how to treat it?

Thanks,

Scott

does it have a calcum skelton like featherdusters, or is it fleshy like a worm? ive got featherdusters that do that on one side of a rock but ive never seen them grow up over a polyp like that

I'd just take some boiling water and spot treat it using a syringe. That should take care of it, but watch and see if it shoots spores out when you kill it. If it does it'll probably grow elsewhere.

Sounds/looks like sponge.. Some sponge has a sort of symbiotic relationship with zaos... link Though I think in your case it is the reverse of the image where the sponge is taking over the polyps! Very interesting at any rate. How fast does it grow back?

This is definitely not a symbiotic relationship. As it creeps up the polyp, they will close up and start looking real bad. What you see in the pic is about 10 days growth. Given the polyp isn't worth much, but I would like to try and save them as they are a nice deep rusty red color.

Thats the same stuff that comes out of the pods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Don't go to sleep. Ha ha. It may be a sponge of some sort or some type of tunicate. Rhizoids are interesting.

bump.....I ended up having to scrub it back again as it had grabbed the head of the polyp and was pulling it over.

If anyone knows how to get rid of this, I would be grateful if you would share some knowledge.

Thanks,

Scott

Manual removal works best for me. You can also remove the rock and let it sit for a few mins...most sponge dies when exposed to air.

I didn't think of that one. I will give it a try. Manual removal works for a bit, but I can't seem to get enough of it to completely do away with them.

Thanks
