I have this white fuzz in my tank, and its starting to grow everywhere.

I was wondering what it was and if I should remove it.

Over the last two days i lost four fish, Coral beauty, two damsles, and a clownfish.

I suspected marine velvet from the symtoms and the way they died. but i was wondering if this stuff could have anything to do with it.

I took my water to the LFS to get tested and everthing came out good.

it is a sponge, and it is a complex little sponge at that. they are nothing to worry about unless they are over taking corals.

Thanks for the quik responces I apreciate them.

I was wondering, like I said before, I beleive i got marine velvet.

Do you think treating the DT with NOX-ICH and using a UV sterilizer would be an affective treatment for it.

The only survivor so far has been A juvenile Yellow tang, cleaner shrimp, green star polyps, hairy mushroom, red mushroom, and a gbta that doesnt look like its going to survive due to bleaching (Another probem in its self).

This is the clownfish right before death. The tank itself is five months old.

There is nothing invertebrate safe that will cure marine velvet. Remove all of your remaining fish to a hospital tank and treat them with a copper based medication like Cupramine. If you don't and it is marine velvet you will likely lose all of your fish. Any that do survive will only serve as host to the parasite that causes this disease allowing all future fish that are added to be exposed, and likely killed.

Both of those pictures show types of sponge and are not the cause of your problem.

Thank you Gwynhidwy,

OK, I have a ten gallon I can set up as a hospital tank.

So what your saying is remove the yellow tang, put it in the hospital tank alone with water from the main tank, correct?

Then let the main tank sit with the shrimp, and mushrooms.

Should i use carbon to get rid of the NOX-ich i put in the main tank already?

Also i was thinking of buying a UV sterilizer and using it on the main tank while it sits, is that an ok idea.

If you guys think a UV sterilizer will work, what kind is a good kind and how many watts shoud i get for a 40 gallon?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ten gallons is very small for a tang, if possible try to get at least a 20G long tank. Water from the main tank would normally be the best way to set up an emergency hospital tank, but since you have the NOX-ich in it you might be better off with new salt water provided you have some that has been mixing and at the right temp for at least 12 hours. If you don't keep premixed salt water around, its probably best to use water from your DT, but without knowing what is in NOX-ich, it may or may not interact with other treatment.

If your tang has marine velvet, he/she needs to be treated with a copper based medication, I prefer Cupramine over others. You need to start treatment quickly as velvet kills quickly. Follow the directions on the bottle of whichever medication you get. It is very important to test the level of copper in the hospital tank regularly. If you use Cupramine make sure the test you buy tests for free and total copper levels, Seachem's copper test does.

I would run carbon in the DT and leave it fish free for six to eight weeks. UV sterilizers can help, but they will not eliminate the organism on their own. The only way to do that without killing off your other invertebrates like corals and shrimp is to leave the tank fishless for six to eight weeks.

thanks again,

The yellow tang is not showing any signs of sickness, but the other fish did before they died.

I'm almost certain that since my other fish were sick, that the yellow tang will eventually get what the others had.

Unfortunatly in my panic to do somthing about the prblem i treated the tank with NOX-Ich, which is Sodium Chloride .50%, Malachite Green .50%, with everthing in it.

I'll have to search CL to see if i can find a twenty gallon, i only have the ten.

npx-ich is reef safe as long as u dose for freshwater which is half the saltwater dose

the clown looks like its got brook.....best cure is 1hr dip formalin in saltwater 10ml/gl .....do 2 days in a row
brook doesnt usually affect other fish as long as your water chemistry is good

Thanks for the replies,

So heres the plan, I picked this up

http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewI...egory=FIUVUUET&child=JB4125&tab=4&size=9 Watt

I fugured it could'nt hurt anything, The guy at the fish store said that he thinks that it will work. Actually he was very passionate about the fact that it would work. He said to throw the uv sterilizer in the tank, leave the yellow tang in there, and give it time.

About the copper, he said that it was'nt worth the trouble, since it is the only suviving fish. That if the Yellow tang already has a parisite that it will be dead in a week.

Am i getting good advice.
