It's some type of chiton, a harmless algea grazer. Don't know the specic one it is, but you can do a search on chitons and you may find the exact critter he is. Basically they are a harmless snail so to speak.

The radular ribbons with which chitons scrape algae from rocks have enhanced rasping power because they contain layers of magnetite crystals within a chitin matrix
I have found they can damage acrylic aquariums-The hard way

+1 for a chiton. A pretty one at that. There are harmless, except for Guy's interesting point about their radula being able to scratch acrylic. Of course, if your tank is glass, then they are entirely harmless.

thanks guys and guy.lol. he got tossed out immediately just be on the safe side. next time i wont worry so much.

Poor chiton, he was harming no one :(

Very few actually can rasp you acrylic tank. I've kept dozens of different species over the years. The worst is the larger ones from Bali, those are real acrylic damagers but you'd know if it was one fo them as they are brown and about 3" long.

Not all eat coraline either.

Well, I am lucky that way, had some chiton in my old tank, they made a nice band around the tank, about 3 to 4 inches high above the sand bed.
frosted it like a shower door:blown:

really looked bad after I drained it.
