Noticed this a few weeks ago, thought it was a dead astrea star fish. But it's now changed shape and seems to be growing. Leads me to think it might be a coral that has started to grow? Any ideas please?

i agree, it looks like a small piece of leather coral, maybe sinularia

It is a piece of that big toadstool that broke off. I have a big toadstool like that and it is constantly throwing off "babies".

It will grow entirely too well IME. It is not uncommon for tanks to become overrun with soft corals if you are not careful.
