Ok so I moved some rock around today and quite a few of them were flipped. I am pretty sure this part of the rock was a cave or in the sand as there is no coralline on it. Anyway I noticed this anemone looking thing on the that part of the rock, it is clear to milky white and it appears the tentacles are coming straight off of the rock. I am going to get a better pic soon, for now here is the best I have

Its in the middle and the tentacles do move with the water current. Anyway I am hoping its not Aiptasia. It doesnt look like anything I have seen before in my tank.

Sounds like Aiptasia to me. Hard to tell from the picture. I got rid of mine with a few peppermint shrimp. They wiped it out in a couple weeks.

Does it look like this?

If so, it's aiptasia.

Do a search on RC for aiptasia and you'll find plenty of information.

Good Luck ... hope that's not what it is. It's really hard to tell from your picture, but it sure has that look about it.

Cathy

I thought that aiptasia was brownish in color. Its about an inch across and clear to milky white in color. I do have a pepermint shrimp in the tank however it hasnt touched the majano, maybe this one will be small enough for it.

Also there does not appear to be a head or a stem to this thing, it really looks like the tentacles are attached directly to the rock. I will try to get a better picture today.

They can show with some variation in color, but are usually somewhat clear or transparent .... one of the names for them is "glass anemone".

It's really hard to tell in your picture. Does it suck back and hide in the rock if you poke it with something? Has it moved since you changed the rock position?

Can you get a clearer picture?

I just noticed in your description that you said 1 inch across. is that including tentacles or is that the center?

If its just the center, and if it's an aiptasia ... that's a huge one and probably too big for one peppermint. They like to work in packs, but the only problem then is that when aiptasias are gone you have a pack of little thugs in your tank.

Just saw your post before mine that you're going to get a clearer picture. Good ... we're all just guessing till we can see better.

It doesnt appear to move at all. When the lights are off or on full it still is close to the rock. I will try to poke at it as well as getting a better picture of it. I will have to pull the rock out and rotate it a bit. I am planning on getting some Joe's Juice for the majano, it works on aiptasia too I think.

Its an inch across all of the tentacles, looks like a colony. I cannot see a center per say, just a buch of tentcales but it could be the angle.

Ok I dont think its aiptasia, its more like a clear slime all over the rock. What is it and what should I do to remove it. Pic below:

Sorry

I've been looking through an Invertibrate book and haven't matched it up yet.

I agree it doesn't look like aiptasia ..... certainly a lesson here in jumping to conclusions from fuzzy photos. :)

The look/flow of the tentacles really looked like aiptasia in your first pictures .... now they're all flat on the rock. The last picture looks more like some kind of sponge, but are there parts that look like tentacles that flow in the water? Or does it mostly stay flat like it looks in the 2nd picture.

You might want to post this in the "other invertibrates" forum to get the attention of someone who could ID this.

I don't know....

Sorry....

But if you get an answer there, will you please come back here and let us know what you find out?

Thanks
Cathy

Ill do that, the angle of the rock and the placement in the back of the tank made it look alot like aiptasia. I had to pull the rock out of the formation and hold it up to the tank glass to get a good picture. I am assuming since its not aiptasia that I may want to just let it be?

Yeah .... it's looking sponge to me too and that's a good point, bolke .... if it's not aiptasia there is no harm in just letting it be.

Could even be sponge, if it doesn't move, but only wave in the current.

Yeah it just waves in the current
