Hello,

Can any please tell me if they recognize the critter in the below photo? It is really very small (smaller than a dime by about half) and seems to be kinda fuzzy in appearance. If you look closely at the below photo, you will see tiny - longish hairs (or what appear to be hairs) all around the outside of it.

Any ideas? I have searched various books, web forums, and image libraries trying to find if it is a specific kind of aipstasia, but it does not look anything like the images I have found.

Any help is appreciated.

It doesn't look like an aptaisia to me.

Is it hard or soft?

I'm thinking it's a hard protrusion (a dead something) with some foramiferan or bryopsis growing on it, but it's just a guess :)

That is good news. I sure wish I knew if it was safe... I have not poked it or anything, so am not sure if it is hard or soft. But it is very fuzzy looking.

Was this picture taken when the lights were coming on/soon to going off? If so, I'd speculate that it's a closed up hydroid, completing or starting its daily cycle of opening/closing. Does it open up to something resembling a clear tentacled strawberry base colored anemone?

No, this was taken during the day and it seems to look like this no matter what time - day or night. Does not change, but may have grown a bit over the last 4 weeks.

Thanks for the reply. I note no change at all throughout the day or night.

Puzzling....

"Puzzling".... quite... perhaps a sponge? I've got something similar to that, but a blue/green color growing in my tank on a rock that's got quite a collection of sponges on it.
