When I was raising cuttlefish this guy came in with the live mysid shrimp I was ordering from FL.. My kid got attached to him and just wondering what he is so I know what to expect.

Thanks!

Looks like a pinfish to me. I imagine they would be pretty aggressive in the aquarium - but I have never used one for anything other than bait.

OK, so I will hope the puffer eats him. He was just a little bigger than the mysis when he arrived. The cuttles where still in the breeder net, so he had a 60 to himself for a while.

Pinfish...

I have always thought that they would make a neat addition to the proper aquarium. They get big (2lbs+) and are super aggressive when it comes to food. I would not keep one with any smaller fish or inverts. We always use them to catch grouper ;)

If you look in that picture you posted, you will see that they do in fact go mouth to tail.

Yes - but the OP's pic is missing the vertical coloration bands from dorso to stomach. It's the black spot on the gill that makes it a pinfish though (so I wasn't disagreeing completely).

Another pic from the side.. I'm going to try to pull him out before he becomes a terror.

Don't mind the HA, I move rocks back and fourth between tanks for the tangs to pick on.

Its a pinfish. The bands and spot you pointed out are not identification cues. They can be hidden or more prominent depending on mood, stressors, environment etc.

For example, look at the first picture, black spot, look at the second, no black spot.

Pinfish, Lagodon rhomboides. They get bigger than most people think, just in the wild they are a bait fish and most people deal with smaller ones.
