Need some help IDing this please. It's white and about the size of tip of my little finger. The critter in it kinda pops up and down.

If this is the wrong place for this sorry, pls move it.
thanks

Can you get a pic at another angle? I'm confused by the two antennae things on the far end of it. Are they attached to it? The white part of it looks like a barnacle but those two things...dunno.

From your description, it certainly sounds like a barnacle. They are crustaceans that use their legs to trap food. I had a very large one (thumb size) as a hitchhiker once, and was able to keep it alive for around 8 months, but eventually it died (I assume it either wasn't getting enough food or wasn't getting proper food.) I wouldn't worry too much about a small one. They are sort of interesting animals, though.

Does it release a long string of slime? If it does it is a vermetid snail.

Azurel, yes I think you are correct. It does trail out lines of mucous. Googled around and opinions vary but many consider it a pest. I'm in agreement as this answers why i have stringy crap all over my tank. Thought it was some kind of algae. So if getting rid of this guy gets rid of stringy crap. Win!

Thank You all for the help.

Pulled the rock out and took some better pics of it. Had a hard snail like shell but was formed and attached to the rock like a barnacle. So it was snail like and inside a barnacle like shell. Can anyone confirm its ID.
Couldn't get a better pic of critter inside as I don't have a macro lens.
Thanks.

It probably is a vermetid snail, although I've never seen one that looks exactly like that. You can image search for "vermetid" and you'll see some that have similar animals, but not really similar shells. I'd have immediately called it a barnacle if you didn't have a pic of the actual animal. Neat find.

Cheers,

Don

WHOA!!!! I'm sure I'm wrong but it looks like an up close shot of some sea creatures eyeball. You'd better watch to see if that "rock" moves! LOL.
