This was sent ot me as a berghia nudi that eats aiptasia . It doesnt look like one to me so I thought I would post here to make sure before I let it go into my reef tank . I dont want to make a costly mistake .

Hi, This is my first post. Joined because I've been trying to get some Bergia Nudibrach myself and wanted a bit more info. (Joined in SEP09 but didnt finish activating until now)

From the few sites I've been reading that does not look like the Bergia Nudibranch that eat aiptasia. I could be mistaken but I believe theyre more white to light purplish.

Tons of information and pictures here, http://www.berghia.net . Its a store website so its a bit biased but I don't think any of the pictures look like yours.

Hope this helps a bit.

WELCOME TO REEFCENTRAL !

I have been to that site and I agree , it looks nothing like a berghia . I brought it up to the guy I bought it from . We will see where it goes . I'm not gonna out it in my tank until I get some kind of ID as to what it is , and what it eats .

Most definitely, when I saw the aiptasia on the rock it was packaged with I couldn't help but think that you would just be putting more aiptasia larva into your system.

Well I just got a PM from him , he says they are orange berghias , but said he would take it back if I didnt want it . I think I may take him up on his offer .

Oh that rock was a rock I put in there as a test . He touched the aiptasia and ran from it .It definitely didnt try and eat it.

I am not a Nudi expert by any means... but I do have Berghia in my tank and they look NOTHING like that! They are white-ish in color with their tufts turning greyish after they have eaten.

My guess w/o research is that is a sponge eater.. - you can always test him out on aptasia. Put him in a small tank with only an aptasia.. if it is not gone the next day you know with some confidence that he is not a substitute for Berghia.

I have heard that there is another slug that is often sold as a berghia that is in fact another species, but still only eats aptasia.. but I believe it also looks nearly identical to Berghia.

A hydroid eater? For a specific hydroid or in general? I would jump right on that. Pesky hydroids can be tougher to get rid of then Aiptasia.

Well if its obligate to hydroids then you could just put it in and let it eat until there's no more food and it disappears, or pass it around to other hobbyists. My guess is it wont last very long either way.
