Id this plague

Just throwing this out there, as you may already be doing it, but you said RO water and not RO-DI....if it's just reverse osmosis, there's still enough trace elements to feed hair algae. Gotta hit that #%€! from every direction.

Siphon clean the substrate and try to remove as much detritus as possible, Phosphate reactor, reduce feeding, nitrate reactor if you have two, but the DI is a biggie.

The three days of darkness will make the algae weak and you can physically remove as much as you can.

Good luck

I don't have microscope pics as I had it analyzed by one of my old college professors who is an algae nut. He told me it's not dinos but that I did have a little bit of everything in there (diatoms, hair, and some cyano)

I did lights off for a day and it seemed the dusty stuff went away but the hair is still there

I don't think it's dinos since I've also haven't lost any cuc to it

Yes I use rodi I have my own system and I use the same water for another tank and I have never had issues with that tank since switching to my own ro-di

I have no idea how old the rocks are in this tank since I got the tank for free from a friend of mine who's a teacher and they were basically going to flush the fish and throw the tank in the trash at her pre-school

I did put in new sand it's been about two months since I've had the tank up and running with this algae problem getting worse over the last 3-5weeks

I don't have a reactor nor do I have the money for one I've considered dosing the tank with chemiclean to get the cyano

So I reached into the tank and pulled on the hairy stuff and it came right off its hair algae for sure

Hum that's cool! Aha on the new sand, that explains it. You don't need a reactor for GFO, a filter sock in a high flow area works fine. The cyano may go away on its own with all the nutrient reduction. Physical removal, wc, day or two lights out, wc should knock it down severely.

good luck!
ivy (nice to see someone who doesn't have dinos)

Its starting to go away I installed a fluval 406 with nothing but jfo and phosguard and cut my lights to 3 hours a day seems to be helping

Crap, I didn't know that. Why did I buy a reactor! Blast.

I don't have a clam but I've dosed algae fix many times with no harm to my cleaner shrimp, corals or inverts.

I was also battling a hair/turf algae bought a reactor for gfo, did wc and it didn't help. Bought a sea hare and and emerald crab and in 2 days about half my problem is gone!

I have an emerald crab or two in there I'm hesitant on a sea hare since I have e a butterfly in there he may eat him
