Looks more like a Cirrhilabrus species to me. Maybe a female rubriventralis?

not C. rubriventralis... it doesn't have red pelvic fins and its dorsal and anal fin are yellow... therefor the only fish it could be in the current identified Cirrilabrus species is C. filamentosus.

Yea it's not a filamentosus, pretty sure it is a Juvi Kwazulu.

There's a single filament on the dorsal fin; the nail in the coffin.

It is indeed C. filamentosus; transitional male.

There's no doubt in my mind on the I.D., but I'm not about to get into a frivolous internet argument over it.

I have a Kwazulu fairy wrasse and it looks nothing like the OP's fish. First, the anal fin is too large to be a Kwazulu, plus it (along with the dorsal fin) is the wrong color. Next the Kwazulu has a yellow/orange face/ opercular region that this fish does not possess. Lastly , and in the picture provided it is very subtle, but the tail of the fish is the pic is black with hints of blue. This is also something not found in the Kwazulu wrasse, but is found in C. filamentosus. Here are a couple of pics of the filamented fairy wrasse for reference as I think it will help, the process.
C.filamentosus (notice the color of the dorsal/anal fins relative to he color of the body. Next notice the color of the tail.

And here's another one of the filamentosus. Both pics were taken from the web for comparison purposes.

Hope this helps.

Question for you.. I have a whip fin fairy wrasse which I believe to be a female.. Looks like the fish in your first URL... Has the same colors on the tail (just not as vivid) and the body is that tan colored, with a white belly. My guess is she is a female, or a juvi? Either way in the last couple of weeks her top fin and bottom fin have gotten this very bright like neon orange.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but was curious. I'll try to get a picture.

she is a transitioning male

I would have to agree with reefjunkie42. I was referencing my Kuiter book on fairy wrasses and it appears that the females colors are more muted, and they also lack the pigmentation (blue) in their tail. Also the filament is not as developed. Hope this helps.

She, or Transitioning He, has started to get the blue in their tail recently and the filament is bright orange.. pretty awesome looking recently.
