I just bought what was sold as a "Purple fire" acro. It's smooth, purple with white tips. Any ideas as to what it could it be? I'll try to post a pic tomorrow
Not an Acropora species at all. You have a Distichopora sp. This is non-photosynthetic "coral" that requires a lot of water flow and good planktonic feeding. I would keep it out of the light or it will grow algae on it and smother it.
Dang... Well I'll do my best to keep it alive! I actually bought it at the place I work at... In general we're really good about correctly labeling things, but I guess this one got mislabelled or something. We have a lot of new people working here, might explain it...

Thanks. I have had a little experience with it as a hitch hiker. Never seen a colony sold. Distichopora is actually a part of the Hydrozoa class. So the feeding and flow will be the tricky part.
