ideal extension for a shroom?

So, if I move my mushroom up about 3" higher (on the rock I want it on) it gets pretty small but the color is so bright velvety green and beautiful... but then if it gets knocked back down to the floor it spreads out to 3 or 4 times that size but the color is more brownish green and not as pretty but it looks more like some of the pics of mushrooms I've seen online. So, do you think that the constriction is the shrooms way of saying it was to intense of light? Or what? I'd prefer the bright green velvety color but I don't want to stress it out either and most that i see online are on the tank bed not up on rocks unless in the back of a tank or shadowed.

I am about as far from being an expert on these as you can get, but having said that, the expansion in the low light area may be the shroom trying to increase it's surface area to get more light. If that's the case, then the higher light location where he is not so expanded might be better... JMO.
