I have a Hurricone Cat3 protein skimmer on my system that's supposedly rated for up to 800 gallons on my system. You should be good with a reef octopus 5000 as they have been one of a few protein skimmers that have managed to hold their own in gallons rated IMO.

I have a 400g tank with a 100g sump, after displacement and everything Im running a 400g system. Currently running a Vertex Alpha cone 250, the tank is new with light stock, the skimmer seems to be keeping up just fine.

I had the same Vertex Alpha cone 250 on a 240g tank heavily stocked and the skimmer barely worked, I think it was just too big for the system.

Don't judge a skimmer by its ratings, judge it by its specifications. Air/water lph and diameter/height. Becketts, needle wheels, mazzie venturi's and down drafts all are perfectly fine at making fine bubbles but the actual maintenance of each method varies greatly. If it were me I'd get a large diameter needle wheel with a couple of high quality pumps. Internal or external depends on you and what your preferences are, both types work very well.

Found this one...downdraft.
ETSS 1800 XR Skimmer... looks massive. This a reliable brand? Thank you.

I can get this local used for hecka low $ w/o the pump.

ETSS 1800XR are great skimmers you wouldn't go wrong picking it up. Other nice skimmers are Reef Dynamics, Aqua Max, Bubble King, and Life Reef just to name a few. One skimmer you should check out is made by Aquarium Engineering very high quality:)

Good Luck!
