ideal QT set up for new angel.

i am inexperienced in QT and i have a new 3cm angel coming in. i was going to use a 10g or 14g biocube or 29g biocube. my question is what is the best methods for QTing. i have cupramine, prazipro, and formalin. i can get any other meds i need. i usually wait a few days and get it eating and then i dose the recommended dosage of cupramine. 2 days later i dose the first round of prazi. i keep them in QT with these meds for 4 weeks. i then do a large water change and wait another 2 weeks before they go into my display. i may wait 4 weeks with this angel though. does this sound good? any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

What type of angel?

4 weeks is a good quarantine period.
A prophylactic prazi dip is not a bad idea, and will not harm the fish.
Once this is done, I'd rum medication free, and observe the fish.
If it eats well, and exhibits "normal" behaviuor, then you should have no worries.

I would bothe with copper, unless you see visible signs of velvet or crypto. Neither of which are particularly common in angels.

Internal worms and parasites, cyanide and decompression related problems are usually the problems you'll encounter. (After shipping casualties).

Depending on the type of angel could potentially eliminate cyanide and deco issues too.

Go with the largest q tank you can afford. More water will exhibit a more stable environment, and allow the fish more room to adapt to captivity.

it's a flame angel. and how would i do the dip? should i do it right when it comes in? with the recommended dosage in maybe a 1g container?

If you see visible signs of velvet it is usually already too late. Most of us use the Cupramine as a preventative. It is the least harsh copper to use with touchy fish like angels. Alot of times Ich, velvet, and other parasites are not seen even within a couple weeks of QT. They may still be in the gills.

As for a dip upon arrival, i would avoid that if possible. These fish are already under stress from shipping, in addition to the fact that the Flame is only 3cm. With larger angels I sometimes do a Formalin and fresh water bath in 1-2 gallon container.

I didn't read the 3cm part. Sorry.

No dip required.
Treat with prazipro. Use copper at your discretion, these days I personally do not until I see visible signs within the Q period, or abnormal behaviour. Tangs I always treat prophylactically with copper. Each to their own.

Ensure pristine and stable water conditions.

As it is a flame, cyanide and deco issues are not normally relevant, neither are temps. (ie cooler water issues).
Feedings are most important, due to the small size. Offer regular small amounts, and siphon off excess to avoid fouling the water.

Goodluck

My quarantine regime is 5-6 weeks in chloroquine phosphate and 1 week of prazi. Depending on the fish the prazi might come first. I try not to run any meds until the fish has been eating for a week... but if there are obvious parasite issues you gotta do what you gotta do.

Make sure your QT is stable before you put the fish in there... It sounds like you don't have it up and running yet? If not, get it going asap with water and a piece of LR from your tank. I run a skimmer and a biowheel on my QT, but as others have mentioned water changes are the best bet to keep ammonia at bay.

Something else to keep in mind... have 2 sets of everything that touches the water and don't forget to wash your hands and use separate towels when working between tanks! Call me paranoid but it defeats the most important purpose of quarantine if *any* water mixes from the QT into your DT.

Good luck with the tiny new angel, keep us posted!

Four weeks is not enough to eradicate ich. A min of six weeks with active treatment is wise to eradicate ich. I go eight weeks.

The big question is do you have nitrification in QT. Do you have plan to make sure that there is no ammonia during QT? Water change for eight weeks is not a reasonable choice.

I never order online. Especially for a flame angel, the degree that it feeds well in a dealers tank is a very critical factor. For a ready feeder like the queen angel this is less critical. Not every even healthy flame angel eats well soon enough to live well.

i was stating what i normally do and thats why i wanted help because i have not QT many fish. and this is not a regular flame angel. it's a hybrid. for ammonia i will do 10-15g water changes every 2-3 days. i don't mind doing the water changes. i have kept angels before so i know how to care for them. i am not very worried about it eating due to it's small size. thanks for the reply.

My ideal QT setup for dwarfs is an already established 20-29 gallon tank with sand, rock and algae growing on the glass and rocks, hang on the pack power filter (like a whisper), a small powerhead, a heater and an ammonia alert badge from Seachem. Reason I like a hang on power filter is the ease of placing/cleaning filter media or adding carbon without disturbing the fish and it helps with gas exchange with the water flow.

I keep a couple of these going all the time.

All fish are treated with Prazipro and Cupramine together. After 7 days I do a 50% water change and the second Prazipro treatment and add more Cupramine. After an additional 7 days I do a 50% water change and redose with Cupramine only and then go another 4-6 weeks with Cupramine. Water changes may be sooner if water quality is down. It is true that some copper will be absorbed by the rock and sand, but Cupramine is not absorbed as quickly as other coppers and is fairly stable. The rock and sand is ONLY used for these QT setups. This is not what I consider as live sand or rock as the copper would kill all the inverts and foul the tank. Best practice for most QT of fish is a bare tank with just PVC for hiding places, but I have found that grazers like dwarfs seem to do much better and be more relaxed in these setups. I also use this for wrasses and jawfish that need the substrate.

Do you find the Prazipro or the Cupramine affect the appetite of the fish? Have you ever had problems getting a fish to eat again after treatment?
Thanks
Sheila

unfortunately i don't have a mature QT ready. i just took it down because i wanted to do an AIO for a QT. the tank is filled with diff. sized pvc pipe. thanks!

klasiksb: No, I haven't. I've actually seen some fish have better appetite after I start treating with Prazipro.

fishkid6692: I understand and that is a standard QT. I was replying to your Ideal QT setup for an angel as some will not eat prepared food at first, but will browse on algae.
