Ideas for 07

How would you guys like a section on our official page where you could meet, post threads, discuss matters etc.. much like here and other reef clubs have?

Questions or comments,
Ron

Sounds good to me. Does that mean we have more space on our web page than we have had in the past.

No it means that this will be a separate page dedicated to just the CVRC community where members will be allowed to post and talk about whatever they like within reason. The site will be moderated but only enough to keep out violations, spam, vulgarity etc...

come guys lets show some interest in this. The holidays are over and gone now so lets put some serious thought into this idea.

I think it would be great if we had our own site. Where we could post and only members were there. We would know when we post something local members would find it first.

Show some interest here.

Reef Central rules! I love our local club so far, but to pull away from this source not good idea. I dont have time to go to many sites, I like the fact I can come here research some info and then pop over to see what the local club is doing here also. If you have your own forums on your own site, then I doubt people will double post every message, here and there. So ones will be forced to go to CVRC website to see everything locally going on. I dont see the advantage.... Just stay here. Just my 2 pennies worth.

Rod

p.s. I think club efforts should be toward events, not websites. Let reef central handle this part of it, it is already done. Focus money and time in club on local events, things we can NOT do over the web, instead of competing with the web, work with it and do something in addition to what we have.

We were looking at a little more privacy for working out meeting details, and would link to here from there. Would still be posting both places. How to video's and that kind of thing.

No disrespect meant at all here. To those who do not know this, the CVRC is not set up as a "traditional club" a little sifting through our past threads will familiarize most with the way we run things. We don't raise money for anything except prizes and that is rare. Everything else is donated 100% and most of the time that is spent on making it all work is my own.

It has nothing to do with competition with RC or anyone else, there are certain things you can do and can't do on RC, I think some of the members wanted to express certain opinions in a manner that is not allowed here on RC, plus most reef clubs on RC do have there own forums.

BTW: The CVRC website is donated by one of the founding members who paid for it himself, no one has ever taken one cent to pay for anything web related. If this happens it will be funded from private sources just as most of everything else has been to date.

Thank You Ron, What I was trying to say.

Absolutely no disrespect is meant (or oppposition to the idea - as it doesn't matter to me one way or the other)....just curiosity.

In general, it seems like the environment here on RC is fairly encouraging of freedom. I also think that Reef Central rocks (generally speaking) and in so many ways just can't be beat. Other than the big no-no of commercial advertising, or perhaps vulgar language, what real restrictions do we have on the expression of our opinions?

But as you mention, it seems to be the "thing to do" for a great many clubs. An example....I like to read the Central Ohio Reef Association (CORA) message board on RC, and they have also set up their own club website and local message board.

I guess it all just depends on how much free time you have!

:D

Ah, well if ya want to do some things that RC doesnt allow then I can see it. Otherwise let the whole nation benefit from the discussions here. You guys know better than me.

Exactly my opinion! Why do a "members only" and keep info from anyone?

If someone needs privacy or a confidential discussion, then email or PM. If someone wants to post a how-to video, then it goes on the website.

I do not see enough participation on this forum to really warrant a private forum. If you were getting a lot more post I could see were it might be handy to sit something up and get it divided into several different forums. But for the most part it appears like your dealing with a relatively small audience. Actually, I found Reef Central forums from the link on the Chemical Valley Reef Club website. I think simply linking people to here is very useful. I know it was for me. I have learned a great deal from this message board.

However, I have no idea what your referring to when you say people feel that they are unable to express their opinions here. I simply have not been around long enough. If that was a big problem I could see why you guys might be interested in an additional site.

PS. I do not even have a tank so take anything I have to say with a grain of salt.

I've been reading this board maybe a couple years, and I have no clue about what is being referred to either.

But I've been tearing tanks down lately and getting out quite a bit...so take what I say with a scoop of salt as well. :-)

Hmmm I think there is some serious misunderstandings going on here.

In no way would we restrict our forums to anyone who wanted to enter and learn FREELY. Our website has only been up for around a year, we have no advertising except our flyers and word of mouth and we have sustained close to 3000 hits. It seems to me that visitors are finding us somehow regardless, and just as we have read other clubs forums in search of local deals, trades etc we would likely pull the same traffic to our forums.

We were working on a local sellers forum idea where any of you could post freely whatever you wanted to sell or trade no matter how long you had been a member or where you were from, a local classified section of sorts for livestock and equipment.

Under RC TOS certain individuals can not post to these forums here and if they were to make a simple mistake they could be banned from RC without a chance of defending themselves.

It would also have given us the option of including a search feature on the site for quick access to past problems and questions.

Personally I could really care less as I said, after all it would be me doing all the work and paying for the software and from what I have seen here there is really no point to consider this proposal any further. Which is fine by me as I have waaaaayyy tooooooooo much to do as it is LOL.

Later guys :)

I could see were this would be very handy.

I agree.
We really should encourage more active participation in this forum before starting our own. It would be nice to have a place where we could post links to other discussions, RC doesn't allow links to certain boards anymore, but I still don't see what could be said about meetings etc. that can't be said here.

We can do that here already. You just can't post on the buying/selling forum with less that 50 posts.

I'll step up and do my part. As I'm early into my research I still have tons of questions. :bum:

I think this is a great idea. There are several of us that are newor inexperienced and we have a thousand questions. This would make it handy for us to know who our sources are as well as see things available local. Some of us have had bad experience/guidance in the past and are skeptical. Thank you for your time you all give to us.
