Ideas for Monthly Meeting Programs & Speakers

C-SEA members:

As the new Program Coordinator, I am soliciting ideas for meeting programs. Please send me an e-mail or PM if you have any ideas for people to speak at our meetings. If you do not know the speaker, let me know a topic you are interested in and I will see if I can find a knowledgeable speaker.

I can't promise I can get all the speakers / programs we want, but I can promise to try. I need your ideas and input to make the meetings better.

Please remember, if you do nothing to make it better then you are not allowed to whine.

I look forward to your ideas. Thanks

Stan

Thanks for taking the initiative to get things rolling! I think it should be a great year with the fantastic crew that we have. I would love to see a nationally known speaker or two at the club in the next year.
It would be cool if you could use your MACNA fame and connections to pull some strings and get the big boys to come out for us ;)

Let me know what you want the topic to be and I will see if we can get a couple of "big boys".
However, I am not aware of too many speakers out there much bigger than me at 6'4"+ and ??? pounds.....

With several of our members breeding clownfish Sally Boggs would be a potential speaker and is also close by in Pittsburgh.

Eric Borneman spoke at CORA on coral coloration. It was a wonderful session.

Well we had a Frag Swap which was pretty wild! How bout a Stuff sale? ie,... used and otherwise aquarium equipment. That could be done garage sale/ flea market like?? No livestock- as that requires electricity, 4 walls+ceiling=More cash out from the funds for rent for the event.

What about a frozen food meeting where everyone throws in some cash or food items and we mix it all up and everyone goes home with some fish and/or coral food?

We usually have a garage sale meeting yearly but this time it was bumped for a speaker. We could easily do the frozen fish food meeting as we have done in the past. It would be great to have a registration and collect the money up front so we don't have to estimate on how many will attend and want food.

When we did this at my house it worked out to about $8 per 6oz flat. If we did it on a larger scale we might be able to get it down another 50 cents or dollar. Compared to Rod's food at $20 per flat it is a bargain and you can choose how smooth or chunky you want your mix.

Here here for a food meeting. Anyone have any thoughts on inviting the owners from the Fish store to come in and speak, (Salty, or AT). It would be nice to hear what they have to say about the hobby, and what it cost them to run their business and such. Could invite Deer G to come in and do a presentation on acrylic work (that guy is a craftsman). Just some ideas.

how about a talk on softies. i hear everyone talk about hard corals but i just dont have the lights. a softie talk would get me there for sure. maybe also include any lps or low light sps that might live in the same tanks. clams too if applicable.

Hey Gang:

Keep the ideas coming !!! I have been taking notes and have started contacting folks to see who the best speakers we can get are.

Thanks

Stan

now that im going to have more time to go to meetings ill shoot out few ideas:
-im with chuggy on the making live rock, and maybe on how to cure it or cook it also
-maybe a meeting on how to frag items, i know how to mount my corals on plugs but not to sure on how to cut some of my items to frag them
-a make your own food meeting would be cool to
-down for having someone talk about breeding too would be interesting to learn

I think this would be a good topic for the meeting.

Like properly cutting favia brain corals, blastomussa's and bubble corals

All good ideas, how about a golf outing? I'm a terrible golfer but I can always blame that on the beers. If interested I live by Paradise Lake, 44260, and know the owners well enough to probably get a good price for the club if any members are interested.

Hi,

How about basic sump design(baffles, where to put the skimmer, refugium, ect.) and also the plumbing in & out of the tank(overflows, gravity feeds). I think a lot of people have unique set-ups that I could learn from. Everyone could submit their designs for an open forum kind of discussion. Better than Stan's "Do fish feel pain" talk over & over & over. LOL Just kidding Stan. Great guy, glad you are on board.
