Identify eel

Monkeyfish

I recently saw an eel that was similar in size and build to a garden eel (Taenioconger hassi), but had a strikingly different coloration.

This eel was about 10 inches long and had alternating bands of orange and white encircling the body. Does anyone have any idea about the species and care requirements?

I not would want to create a name for something that its not, isn't that what some LFS do?

Without a picture some identifications can be mind blowing for you any idea in the number of eel species world wide? You can try somewhere over 800 species and still counting.

The other trick in this is your eel as right now may not as yet have its adult colors, in which case not many people had seen the eel, specially when it`s a juvenile.

So in most cases a pic helps a great deal, but also I not put your hopes to high. :strooper:

I knew it would be difficult to id without a pic, but it was something that I just happened to see on my lunch hour. I'll bring my camera tomorrow and if it's still there I'll try and get a pic to post in the evening.

Here at reefcentral, we seem not to have a welcoming in the smile list so I just do :celeb2: :celeb3: and say welcome to RC.

You are correct on the species of question here I feel and I guess Monkeyfish that your a DSB with much currents for that is how this Garden Eel and others of its kind live for they live in individually burrows in strong current which bring to them their main food which is plankton.

monkey-
as properly ID above, this is a splendid eel, another graden/conger eel type fish. They work great in tanks w/ deep sand beds and (since I have one) will mention that once established eat almost anything meaty that passes their whole.
I wish i could find more.

AndoCommando got it in one - that's exactly what it was...
It's the only time I've ever seen one in a LFS. Unfortunately the eel was purchased by someone else before I got back to the store.
