if not ick than what?

Okay yesterday my fish were loaded with the infamous little white dots. I read the the tread on ick and the life cycle and all the articles said they dots stay on the fish 3-7 days. Out of desperation and not having RO water to start a hyposalinity tank in the event thvat I could catch the fish, I crushed up a bunch of cloves of garlic (very scientific) and put them in a filter bag and hung them in the filter. This morning when I woke up, 90-95% of the spots were gone. Okay so if the ick has a life cycle on the fish of from 3-7 days, I really can't believe that the crushed garlic did anything other than cloud my water which it did. So I am asking the question what else looks like ick. The poor blue tang has little welts where the parasites were attached, but he is eating. I have also soaked garlic with some brine/mysis shrimp.

I am also trying the 5-nitroimidazole treatment (NO-Ick) of the entire reef tank as a fall back although I have read that most people say this doesn't work but I thought I'd give it a try.

So back to the question can the parasites grow to where you can see them and then fall off in one day?

What is your water temperature? The only guess that I would throw out is that if you have an elavated temperature...then the life cycle is progressing more quickly and thus the thorants shed sooner.

Just speculating though...since temperature and salinity have been shown to influence the rate of progression through the life cycle.
