Is tang or goby illegal in CA? I was on a aquarium related job interview today. The interviewer asked me about my aquarium, so i told her that i have tang, wrasse, and goby. I didn't have a chance to tell her what kind of tang and goby, she suddenly said that I have illegal fish in my tank and i could be fine for that. Is tang and goby really illegal?

I think the interviewer has been misinformed. I dont think they would sell tangs and gobies at fish stores if they were illegal. Maybe some types of tang and gobies, but most likely you wouldnt have them. Maybe, the interviewer thought you caught the tang and gobies yourself. Then that would be illegal if you dont have like a divers lisence to catch them.

*** illegal?

maybe she thought it was inhumane and that you could be fined for inhumanely keeping large fish like that. but hey, it's her opinion really... it's kind of wrong to just blurt that out as if it's fact without any justification

Some gobies are illegal; some tangs are illegal. That doesn't mean they all are. If you bought it in a fish store, that isn't a guarentee of legality, but it's a good indication. If a store is going to deal is contraband fish, they keep them in the back. :)

You could show her the species lists at www.cites.org, but I doubt you're going to get the job!

Since it was an interview, maybe she was just testing your knowledge of the hobby. If you didn't know that the fish were not legal then she might assume you know little about the industry. But then again maybe she was just an idiot! You probably will never know though. Because if it was a test, you failed it, if she is just an idiot she wouldn't't hire you because she thinks you are an immoral aquarist.

Go to downtown LA, you can get your goby fix from one of the guys selling fish out of the trunks of their car in the fashion district. That’s where all the major fish pushers go. ;)
