So I recently went on a cruise and decided to but a DSLR to take with me on the trip and it was great for normal pictures, but I can't take nice pictures of my tank to save my life. The camera is a Nikon d3200. This is what I have tried so far.

  1. UV filter
  2. The coffee filter trick
  3. All the preset modes available
  4. Manually setting the White Balance (The measure method always fails)

I'm about to return this thing and go back to taking pictures with my Nexus 5, but wanted to see if anyone here has the same or similar camera and can help me figure this out.

What lighting do u have? If LEDs and it's to blue try getting the red filter for the front of the lens. I have the same camera and love it for tank shots

I posted this on the zoanthids fanatics page on Facebook, hope it helps.

1-get a DSLR with macro lens 2-get a 18% gray scale paper 3-take a pic of the gray scale paper under your tank lights 4-apply picture on your camera as the white balance 5-fine tune to your liking 6-take pics and use photo adjusting software within the camera or on your computer 7- enjoy the pics

I do have LEDs and like you guessed the pictures look too blue. I will try this filter idea and see how it goes. Thank you for the suggestion.

I have tried this several times, but it gives me an error when I try to measure the WB. I will try the red filter option and see where it goes. I appreciate your help.

Same here so this is why I took a picture and applied it as your white balance, I could never measure the white balance.

Once you take a pic after setting the white balance, in galary hit the info button and further adjust the white balance for each picture.

I'll try this too. Thanks again.
