I'm feeling old

How so? At 18 you can be tried as an adult... ?

You're responsible financially for them until they are 21. 24 if they are in school. I just had to fill out financial information for my son who will be 23 in July. He bought his own house 2 years ago, has a full-time job, and I can't claim him on my taxes anymore but they still base his financial need on my income.

Man, does that ever suck.
You're saying basically I should just take those 529 accounts and upgrade the lighting on my reeftank then?

Well, the less you have, the more they get for school!

Upgrade your reef, then quit your job and file for bankruptcy the tax year before they have to fill out the forms.

Hehhee, ya know, it's funny, I ran that scenario by my financial advisor (because honestly, I wonder if I'm not screwing myself by socking it away now, that's usually the way it works, especially in NY!) His advice?

"Odd's are, you aren't going to qualify for bupkus anyways (or, at least we hope you won't become a destitute single illegal immigrant on welfare with 7 kids out of wedlock), so you might as well get the kid his beer money."

Shrug... one more cold, sobering thought on a friday night.

The really sad part is once they turn 17 (used to be 16), you can't legally make them do anything. Up until 17 you can get a PINS petition in family court to make them abide by the rules of the house or go to juvi. They can leave home and do whatever they want, and you're responsible for them. Even better, at 18 they can go to the hospital or doctor, be treated, and you get billed for it but they won't give you any information about why they were there unless the kid signs a release. The laws in NY really don't make sense at times.

ROTFL...

He'll be a bloody pulp in the backyard if he comes home w/ a Doctor's bill and no explanation.
We won't go into my daugher. ;) By the time she's that age, she'll know enough not to come home!

- Mac

Mac, OH NO, you can't touch the little cherubs! You'll be arrested for assault.

My son is almost 14, going through the stupid stage, but whenever he does something wrong, usually minor, stupid stuff, he feels so guilty about it, he tells on himself. Now the 12 year daughter, lays low and lies. She's probably gotten away with more than I'll ever know!

As long as the money is used toward education, you can still benefit from the tax advantages the 529 account offers.

Your mission is to convince the IRS you are doing a study to see if an increase in lighting will improve the quality of the reef. Heck, you may even qualify for a grant!

I think the only good thing about N.Y. is upstate reef society. We have one of the highest taxed states, our child support system is in need of a MAJOR overhaul, our Govenor only wants to help the rich get richer and help NYC(screw all the other cities of NY)and now the native americans have been screwed again by our illustrious govenor by being forced to charge us tax on cigarettes and how about 3 dollars a gallon for regular unleaded, how much do you think Bush is making off of this.(our president sucks)

LOL! Eeeeeassssssyyyy there big Henry. ;)
I think a lot of folks will agree with what you've said (myself included), but at the risk of getting this thread locked, lets get back to talking about how old Rick is feeling today. :D

Hehhe, I know what you mean about re-purposing the money however. I plan to use that as a threat when the kids get older -

"I can go get my MBA anytime.. just keep screwing up, Boy."

"We'll send your mother to Dental School, so I never have to work again!"

Yup... little cherub's allright. ;)
The littlest Mac turns 1 tomorrow. :(
I know where you're at, Rick. I know where you're at.....

I at times feel the same. Oldest is 30, youngest is 25. One granddaughter who is 2 1/2. Oldest dog is 15, youngest is now 11. Hard to believe how fast time flies. I'll never be able to retire. Did that Bankruptcy thing, bad bad move. OH well, that's life. Hope everyone has a great day. Going to burn some of that expensive gas and take a road trip today. Hubby returns to FL on Wed. and wants some quality time.
