I'm puzzled???? Fish are missing...

The tank is not overstocked, I do my research and friend is owner of a fish store. All my inhabitants are in the juvenile stage which makes the fairly small and as for the ones which require more size I plan to move into a larger tank in about 5-6 months. I drip acclimate all my fish and i test temperature/SG. I really don't appreciate how people jump to conclusion or scold members for their setup/advice. I do plenty of research and do exceptional tank maintenance, which is what more than most people can honestly say.

I appreciate the members that took a moment to answer with common sense and thought put into your reply unlike the others who scolded on stock or other downfalls in their view.

You post a bunch of contradictory statements. If you did your research you would know that the general consensus is that your tank is overstocked. I'm not sure where you've been researching, but 14 fish in a 65g tank is a lot. I don't think there's a single saltwater fish forum on the internet that would say otherwise. That's the reason that people in this thread said that. Not because they lack common sense, which is what you seem to believe.

For what it's worth the only reason I bothered replying to this thread is the condescending attitude you decided to have with your last statement. You posted a question, received a lot of good advice addressing the question you posted. The reality is you're just another person asking a question that refuses to accept any answer that isn't the one they wanted to hear when they made their post.

Isn't the general rule of thumb 1" of fish per a 2-4gal? That is what I have read and been told in several places. According to this rule my tank is not over stocked and highly doubt that is the reason for him dying, since the biggest fish is maybe 3 inches and the rest are all around or just over an inch . Ive never been in one hobby where answers are readily available for everyone yet in a forum the answers are so contradicting and partly incorrect. Thanks to all but the replies for the most part wasn't the answer I was looking for. And also lights most likely didn't cause him to die but it is a change which can cause stress, stress can make a fish act weird, cause it to act unnormal or in extreme cases can cause death. So that to me could be a plausible reason but not what killed him.

I will only be browsing this forum for local reef club/ things for sale, I will post in another forum for advice fom members who are kinder and take more into account than an "overstocked" tank which isn't even my problem in the first place.

I've found my own answer anyways. He was being picked on by the other clown. Had nothing to do with overstocked tank.

Im sure that another forum would love to have someone who is so wise. Good luck.

1. The "inch per x gallon rule" is unrealistic and inaccurate. It does not apply to this hobby.
2. One of the reasons that fish will pick on each other is that they need their own "space or territory" A crowded aquarium does not allow fish to have their own space, hence they will fight and kill to create that space.
3. Try reading some more. You will eventually come to realise that your tank is, indeed, overstocked.

"Inches per gallon" is an archaic fresh water "rule" that has no application to saltwater hobbyists. I agree with the above.

Regardless of what "rules" you decide to follow, remember this very simple concept:

Surviving is not thriving.

Having 14+ fish SURVIVE is a tank that is considered SMALL in the marine hobby does not mean that it is OKAY!

Check your attitude. Don't ask for help if you already think you have all the answers.

OP,

I have a 180, and I honestly want my tangs out. They need much more room. If a fish that swims miles in a day can cross your tank in less than a second, it probably isn't happy.

I bought the smallest tangs I could find, but they still will grow and need more room. Watching "Tanked" does not count as research in the hobby.
