I'm trying the impossible

I'm trying to marry an existing yellow stripe maroon with a new one. Yes I am crazy.

I made a 4x4x10 acrilic box amd got the new maroon in there inside the tank. New maroon is a bit ligter in color and is also a bit larger. I'm hoping that it is a female. They are both under 2 inches so they might still be undecided.

1st day: Both trying to fight but they cant because of the box.

2nd day: No fighting but the existing maroon is visiting the new one at least every 5 minutes. I guess he likes her.

I have not seen them do any of the shaking submission stuff yet.

You guys think this is going to work? How long should I hold on untill I let the new maroon free into the tank? Any other ideas?

Thank you,

BK

Not impossible but patience is required and some old assumptions have to be broken.

You have started off the right way with a larger and smaller in the pair.

Presonally I prefer to introduce them to a tank at the same time. Have had success that way before with Maroons.

Don't assume the larger is the female yet there are several thoughts on this but a single Maroon does not necessarily mean female.

I would give them some time. Often acceptance is confused with pairing typically this is not the case with Maroons as they typically can not stand another in the tank together and considering the accepted school of thought today is a female can not become a male however a male can become a female.

What size tank are we talking about? Watch for the tell tale signs of head shaking, keeping in mind when they are doing that and she spend most of her time visitng him. There really is no set time line sometimes it takes days and some times it takes weeks.

It's a 76 corner tank. It's about 40 inches from corner to corner, 31 inches tall and 20 inches from front to back.

I was thinking about a week of this seperation method. But I know that this is not to be set in stone so I'm playing it by ear.

I wish I would have found both of them at the same time and let them battle it out but I just could not find 2 good looking maroons. I found the first one at CPI and the 2nd one at TWP. If there should be any breeding I wanted to rear the best possible fry. (hopefull thinking.)

Are there any other signs except for the head shaking. Bottom line is that I don't want to kill anything. I would rather give one away then have one killed.

Sounds like you have the setup for it if it is accepted. As for other signs with any of the clowns there is typically a swim by pass where they are close to each other followed by head shaking. If the larger is not attacking the container out right you have some of the first signs that there maybe a pairing in the works.

If she has a place she calls home keep him as close to there as possible. The other thing I have seen in the past is she will accept him in that corner but no where else in the tank so move him around occassionaly so she gets use to seeing him around the tank.

Let me know how this turns out once you release the fish! I have been wanting to do something like that because I have a Tang that is just down right mean to everything I put in the tank. and I would like to find a way to introduce them with out letting them go in the tank.

I am moving the new fish closer and closer to the anemone the the other maroon is attached to. They both seem curious. This looks better then I thought.

Im Lon 2: I will try to keep this updated to let you know how things turn out. If nothing else I will PM you to let you know.

I know people love pictures so there you go. The new maroon is in the box. The old one is in the tank. And the anemone is at the bottom.

I released the new clown into the tank. New maroon is the dominant one. It is a little larger. There was some chasing around and some fin locking and nipping but nothing crazy. Right now they are in the opposite corners. They swimm by every few minutes and give eachother the middle fin and the stinky eye but no fighting. It's looking good. Looks like this introduction method might work.

She'll beat the heck out of him. When I paired mine in the backwards way like this, the male had little round bit marks on him that came and went for a few weeks. All is blissful now in thier abusive household. He sleeps in the basement most the time(under the anemone).

They are friendly now. Only a bit of chasing now and then but nothing damaging. She even lets him eat. They did not figure out how to live in the anemone together but it looks promising. I think that the 4 days in the box made the intro a lot more smooth.
I will keep on watching.

And we have a pair. This went much more smooth then I would have ever imagined. They are hanging out together and they are all over the anemone. If everything stays the way it is right now I will be happy. I might have to get a larger anemone for them. How large do sebae anemones get anyway?

Cool!

Question for the clown lovers... Do other breeds of Clowns pair up? I have a Clarky, and one from Kathy.. The Clarky is double the size of the other, and the clarky just started chasing the other clown the tank. I have had both clowns for over a year, and they have seemed to ever mess with each other.

Just an update.

They are still hanging out together. They are all over the anemone. The few bites the lady took out of the little guys fins are healing up. Looks good for now.

P.S.:If anyone wants to borrow that box or wants one made let me know.

If you guys get those to breed you can make a freaking killing. It's a crime against nature but what the heck. Sure would be interesting.
