I'm very excited, and would like some advice: Inheriting a 90g.

id maybe look into a different sump, a nice old fish tank would do, i can't tell if u have one already but a nice refuge i think would help.

An Update...

An Update...

Tank Two:

When I started talking about setting up a couple 20g tanks for the sump I found out that my brother-in-law gave dad his old 55g and stand a few years ago. It's been in his garage and is free for the taking....

So...

Now I'm planning on setting up a 90g and a 55g with a shared sump instead of just the 90g. I Really want to keep the cost down, so one tank will be empty for now... but I'm sure that will not last. :lmao:

The 90g
I will move dads 90g as is (replacing the sand and water)

Nothing under the tank, which gives me some nice growing space.

The 55g
This will start out empty, but I'm open to ideas. Something relatively inexpensive would be nice. No hurry though.

I'm going to drill the back of the tank (bottom is tempered),

20g sump under the tank.

Waterflow:

90g Display ---> 55g Display ---> 20g Sump ---> Back to 90g Display

Sometime next year I can add larger sump below the 90g tank after I start adding some life to the 55g. I'm not sure if it will be, but I'm open to suggestions.

Purchases

Already Purchased:
$99.00 = RO6100-DI replacements for 4 stages, 3 x DI Refil, and a new RO Membrain.
$107.38 = GFI, Buckets, Super Glue, PVC Fittings, Overflow materials, and tank drilling materials.

Planned:
$53.06 = 2 x CaribSea Aragamax Sand (30 lbs bags)
$44.16 = 2 x Marineland Precision Submersible Heater "“ 200W
$14.99 = 1 x Marineland Maxi-Jet PRO Water Pump "“ 600 PRO

How do my planned purchases look?
Any suggestions?

Keep in mind that I'm trying to go cheap. I can upgrade things over the next few years.

Thank You!

Tomorrow is moving day, and I have a quick question...

When people say "use gloves for picking up live rock", I picture either the thin "hospital" gloves or the old fashion yellow kitchen gloves.

What should I use to protect my hands from the worms that are living in the rock and sand?

Thank You!

Nitrile (latex if your not allergic) gloves work the best, and yes think hospital gloves.

Why not use the 55 as a new sump? Would definitely give you plenty of room for equipment and a refugium with a big ol wad of chaeto if you wanted.

^^ +1

I use a heavy pair of nitrile gloves for rocks (mine look similar the yellow ones, but are heavier and blue), for corals use the hospital style gloves. Make sure they are powder free. I use vinyl, (they are 10% of the cost), but they will puncture more easily than nitrile...

Thank you!

I thought about it, but...

1) The move is going to be sooooo much easier this way.

2) I have a 55g and a 90g this way!

3) I like the look of more live rock in the tank than dad does so the rock from his 90g should be closer to what I like in the smaller 55g.

I have the 55g completely setup here waiting on the live rock, coral, and fish.

Tomorrow I will move all of the live rock, coral, and fish to the 55g in one trip - and I can spend the day acclimating everything in rubbermaid tubs and moving them into the tank.

Then the week after next I'll pick up the 90g and can take my time cleaning the tank, painting his stand (I love the look of his stand, but it doesn't match anything we have), and re-plumbing his tank.

I can take months setting up the 90g exactly like I want it.

PS: I have a 20L for the sump currently.

Today I moved everything to the new 55g tank.

I was forced to aquascape the rock as a "wall". I tried to give as many openings as possible.

Moving from a 90g to a 55g was the clearest possible demonstration of how important tank depth is!

All of the fish are swimming around, and I think the move went well for them.

I've even started to see the other life on the live rocks come out of hiding.

Most of the coral is still "closed up". It's only been a couple hours, so I'm not actually worried about them yet.

I'll watch for an ammonia spike, but *fingers crossed* I think the move went very very well.

=========== Lighting ============
==============================

The current lighting is the largest size here. It's a total of 30 watts LED.

The website says:
12" - Medium Light Corals/Large Polyp Stony Corals (LPS)
18" - Medium Light Corals/Large Polyp Stony Corals (LPS)
24" - Low Light and Soft Corals

The depth for my corals is 8" - 18" currently.

===============================
========= Current Stock ===========
===============================

2 x Clownfish
3 x Blue Chromis

The corals pictured above.

==============================
======== Coral Questions =========
==============================

Does anyone know what these corals are?
What do they like?

High current? Low current?

I'd like to add some colorful corals.

I'm thinking of adding a couple small zoanthid frags.

Does that sound like a good choice?

===============================
========= Fish Questions ==========
===============================

I'm thinking of adding:

2 x Royal Gramma
2 x Firefish
2 x Pajama Cardinalfish
1 x Six Line Wrasse

I need to research this more first. I have not looked

I believe that a 55g is large enough that two of each should not have any problems. But please correct me if I'm wrong.

What order should I add them in?

How much should I space them out?

============================
======== Cleanup Crew =========
============================

There is no cleanup crew in the tank at all. No snails, no hermit crabs, nothing.

I'm planning on adding the following:

20 x Asterea snails
30 x Blue-legged Hermit Crabs
1 x Peppermint Shrimp
1 x Brittle Star

How does that look?

Should I wait a couple months before adding them?

Edit: Updated the wrasse to 1. Further reading makes it sound like they should be kept to 1 in the tank. Added the cleanup crew section.

Sorry for so many questions, but I'm excited! :dance:

Thank you!

Update

I thought I would post some pictures of the tank now.

I moved everything into the 55g last Sunday.

I added 4 small frags and a cleaner crew.

My new frags (in order) Hammer, Galaxia, Clove Polyps, and Trumpet.

I'm happy with the new aquascape and am impatently waiting for the day I can add in a Firefish, Royal Gramma and Longfin Fairy Wrasse.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Looks good! Your lighting may be a little low wattage for LED but everything looks good so maybe not. I'm running 300w on my 65 at about 60% at the moment. Slowly increasing it so as not to shock any of my new frags.

Check out the McCoskers fairy wrasse too. Mines still a sub adult and the colors are great. They're fully reef safe as well.
