Impatiently waiting for 0 TDS

UPS still hasn't arrived with my birthday present.

I am so excited, I've been gifted with the Typhoon III.

My friends think I'm wacky for getting so excited over an RO unit. I don't think they understand. The other half of my birthday present is a skimmer. I'm thinking of ASM. I'll have around $250 to spend.

It's a good birthday this year.

:)

I always got anxious waiting for equipment too.

Whenever it is/was, Happy Birthday.

I'm always excited to get my toy delivered. But once I received it usually takes a few weeks before i could have a chance to install it.

I checked the UPS website on the status and they only had the billing information. Knowing that it was picked up yesterday, I called UPS before 7 o'clock and they said it was on the truck to be delivered. I waited until after 8 o'clock to call again, and I was told this time that they were not even sure that it had been picked up yet. I then call again trying to get a hold of my local office, which is only 5.7 miles from my house, and I am told that there is no phone number that they can give me.

Me: "There is no phone number?"
Her: "That's correct, and they only take messages up to 7 O'clock"
Me: "So your telling me I can get into my car and drive there and
talk to a person, but I can't call them?"
Her: "That is correct. I'm sorry for the delay and inconvenience."

And ironically, the UPS website now says that my package has been rescheduled for delivery tomorrow.

So, no TDS free water for one more day. :(

I have a ASM G4+. I regret it already. I wish I'd picked up a GEO. The ASM build quality has much to be desired. It's performant, but I'd rather of spent the extra $ and got more quality.

What is it about the build quality that you think is lacking? I was hoping to get a skimmer that was a great performer and would last a long, long time. I was leaning toward the ASM G1X, or the G2. It would be for my 75g that has been sitting since March of last year.

No, they don't. :)

I got it! It's here! I almost kissed the UPS guy!

My TDS before using it, from the garden hose:

And here it is hooked up out in the backyard: (not quite sure where I'm going to put it yet, or just use as is)

And my long awaited "after" TDS reading:

This thing was a snap to get started, so easy! :D :D :D

The only thing that is amiss is my PSI is only 64 or so. I know that 75 PSI is optimal. Is this just going to make my filters clog a little faster? I cannot wait to see results in my tank. I tested the water I was getting from a glacier machine in front of the grocery store and it had a TDS of 40!

I also tested the RO without the DI and I only had a reading of 1!

Suhweeet. Anything above 50psi is great, don't worry about 64psi! I also get 1-2TDS from RO only with ~120 TDS input. :D

edit: oh yeah, one word of caution, using it in direct sunlight probably isn't a good thing, it will promote growth of bacteria in your filters.

How much $$$ did you end up paying for it??

It was $249.00 with shipping and tax. (we had to pay sales tax because we live here. :))

Thanks for the reminder, if I use it "outside" I'll be bringing it in between water production. I think I'm going to get a Y and hook it up with the washing machine, and make water in the carport so the sun doesn't crack the filter housings. I'm sure I'll still have to bring it inside during the warmer weather, it gets pretty toasty here. (not that I'm complaining, mind you)

I have recently bought a complete reef set-up w/ all the assorted gear. I'm the least happy with the ASM skimmer. Let me qualify that I'm not bashing the unit--I belive it will be a high value skimmer--but it's on the cheap end.

Comparing the GEO calc reactor to the ASM--they are in completely different leagues. GEO: 1/2" cell cast acrylic. flawless construction. great fit and finish. The ASM is about the lowest quality plastic you could possibly use and hold water, the fit and finish is not great, the seals have a tendency to leak.

Again, I'm not saying that at the end of the day the ASM does not perform. I can't really judge that at this point because my system isn't up yet. I'm just saying that the quality of workmanship and materials is not anywhere as good as GEO (and other brands such as MRC, etc). BUT, ASM is very inexpensive compared to other brands. It is easy to see how ASM drives down cost.

For my cost/benefit ratio, I'd rather have some more quality in materials and workmanship while paying a bit more $. Seeing the quality of GEO has made me regret not spending the extra +- $150.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't read this as an anti-ASM post!!! I'm not saying it's a bad unit--only that it is a high-performance budget skimmer.
