impending doom

Jamie, I could be wrong but I think a 37 or a 29 is the same footprint as the 20 long.

You would have a greater depth and you could aquascape upward.

As far as seeding the new tank if you don't want to mix in the crushed coral you could scoop some into a media bag and set it on the new substrate. Personally I put about 20-30 lbs of CC on top of my 120 lbs of aragamax in my 150. The sand bed critters and hermits mixed it in pretty well over time. I like a little chunk in my substrate. I've always felt it looks more natural.

I agree to using a 20 gal tote as a temporary measure and upgrade the tank or just get another 20 L. I've always liked that tank myself.

Good Luck.

I know I read somewhere not to use any CC at all in a reef tank. Might want to do more research on that.

How's the hairy shroom doing? Didn't you get 2 of them?

CC depends on what you're keeping. if you plan to have gold headed sleeper gobies then a lot of CC can choke them.

If you have 100% CC then surface area is an issue. Larger grain size = less overall surface area.

The two biggest reasons to go with oolitic sand that come to my mind are; First, the greater surface area you get from many more grains with a smaller grain size. Second, since oolitic sand paks flat you do not get as great a buildup of detritus ob the top layer.

That said I still look like the look of about 10-20% crushed coral mixed in with the sand. I think it gives a more natural appearance.

Someone with a greater scientific knowledge can jump in here to correct me if I am wrong. I have had this setup in the 150 for about 3 years with excellent results. Some of that result is in your tanks Jenny. ;) I don't tremember what but you got an item or two from me at the last swap. I think they were some funny looking green mushrooms (rhodactis maybe?). I've never been really good with identifications.

Hmmm... no rhodactis from ya but I pretty much bought up all the good-looking zoas! I've completely lost track, what I've gotten from who.

thank for all the help guys...and everything you said re: CC (from what i have read) is correct. But i didnt know this before i started the hobby.
I am home now and it looks like i need to do some transferring.
i will keep ya updated!! And puffer now has me hooked on zoas too!!
