In search of new clowns...

ok well heres the story...i'll make it short.

i had my 12g setup 2 clowns (ocellaris)blah blah blah. I have since then upgraded to a 20g and threw them into that..i then got a pistol goby pair, and my friend had a small small sailfin tang that i just had to get. i know people say no tangs in something so small but he was tiny and had just came in. he got ich and died...transfered it to my other tanks mates...i setup a quarantine which i shoulda done to the tang in the first place but stupid me. so everyone went over to the 12 qt, and my black ocellaris has since died was my first fish. i now got a gbta on an acan colony from my friend...i know ocellaris wont host it but since the male died...i don't wanna find another male to pair with her so looking for a natural host for the gbta

i have a 40g in my room not setup just sitting there i will set it up a little later down the road but what woulda you guys suggest getting. the lfs had some nice tomato clowns for $22 but am also looking at skunks too. I want allardi or something along those lines but i know they'll out grow the tank and would be moved to the 40...so i dunno what to do..this is the only place i could turn too...anybody have some opinions or anything just venting i guess

Well I would personally suggest you slow down. I would have considered the tank maxed before you put in the tang. I have a ocellaris pair and 2 gbta's in a 40 and that's all that's going to be in in. I would also repair her. They may or may not host in the anemone, mine and many others do. Check out the faqs at the top of this forum.

the tang was small at best it was 2 inches if that...the 12g was setup for 6 months before i switched to the 20 and its been up for a month plus now...the male clown was about an inch inch and a half and the female 2 inches at best also...pistol goby pair has next to nothing bioload at all.

i had a royal dottyback and my 2 clowns in the 12 and all my params were fine...2 small clowns and a yasha thats 2 inches with the tang was close to the max but nothing major really..

i am taking the fish into consideration but a 20g you could fit probably another 1 or 2 fish with the clowns and yasha but if i get bigger clowns the tomatos i would probably just keep them with the goby/pistol pair..

The thing with tangs is that it isn't necessarily their size but their built in instinct to hang out around a certain territory. At the LFS I work at we have two different sized holding tanks- some for bigger fish like Angels Tangs Rabbits etc that come in at a bigger sized and smaller ones for nano fish like gobies, clowns etc that are smaller.

Despite the size of tangs I always try to put them in the larger tanks. Otherwise they start going back and forth and up and down the glass and really look distressed.

I would recommend waiting at least 6 months before putting an anemone into any tank, maybe 4 at the most if you are an experienced hobbyist and you feel your tank is ready- cycled, any algae cycle has passed, there's noticable copepods, coralline is growing, there's phyto in the water etc... Its this careful balance that really helps an anemone to thrive in a tank imo, rather than just good clean water and a lot of light.

I will be the first to say theres a million ways to do everything in this hobby but you will end up finding out the hard way what works and what doesn't. To avoid this doing some research and getting some advice might help in the future if you don't mind being a little open minded on the subject.

Size of a fish has little to do with the aquarium size.. It is swimming room. Some very large fish can be housed in very small tanks while some small fish need large tanks because they do not feel comfortable without swimming room... tangs need 4' of tank to feel comfortable in my opinion and some require even more, there is always the exception but this is a fish that does alot of good in the wild so why take a chance. Of coarse size does play apart though and also aggression.

I would not put two tomatoes in a 20 gallon... 2 skunks would be ok but they need to be the only two fish. Anymore than that and you are putting a strain on your system.

For a 40 you could get away with two tomatoes but because it is agressive I would beware of anything else in the tank.


Saty away from allardis till you have more experience... You should be looking at captive bred fish too...
