Information on Tank Plant

G'Day from Oz all,

I am keen to find out any thing I can about the tank plant pictured below.

FYO it is soft and spongy to touch and grew as a self starter on a piece of LR that had been in the tank for 4 yrs. I first noticed it about 6 months ago as three 10mm pink tufts. It is now over 150mm wide and high.

Although the family like the look of it and my Clowns like it as a country residence while away from their Heliofungia home, I believe I should prune it soon before it takes over the tank . . . any suggestions/comments/info appreciated.

Hey marinemad,

That's pretty! That is some sort of rhodophyta (red algae). I'll flip through my algae book and see if I can figure out what it is.

Thanks kmk . . . any information appreciated . . . I always like to be able to put a name to my tank contents . . . do you think I could prune it or would that kill it (or worse, stimulate more growth)

I doubt any pruning would stimulate growth. If you prune it, don't throw it out. If you mount the cuttings to a rock or something I'm sure you could find some people who would really like them.

Thanks for your interest and feedback all

It feels a bit slimy but feeling is best summed up as soft and spongy (bit like very firm Jello strands

I'm going to take a cutting and try to "strike" it like a garden plant . . .
