Inline Filter

What side of a pump makes more sense if you are adding a inline filter/reaction chamber? Intake/ Exhaust? This is a run of the mill impeller powerhead pump. I have it on intake but seems to have really pinched the flow down. it is a 10" long 2" wide ABS tube with filter pad-carbon-filter pad.

I would run on exhaust side. that way u push thru your filter media. the flow is what it is u may gain alittle going to the exhaust side but not much. you will have to go to a bigger pump.

With a power head, I'm not sure it would make much difference. I suppose it might be a little easier to run on the intake as it would be easier to dislodge any particulates.

Wouldn't a sponge prefilter be the same thing? Mag pumps and lots of pond pumps have sponge prefilters.

Your saying they reduce the life of the pump?

Potentially, yes. Anything that increases the vacuum on the inlet side of the pump can cause a reduction in pump life. That's part of the reason why it's so important to keep them clean and free of debris.

In general, pumps and powerheads handle backpressure much better than increased vacuum on the intake side.
