Insane Blue with Reeflux 12K????

So these corals are getting something under reeflux that a general 10 isn't providing? Has anyone seen a coral color up going from xm10k to reeflux?

That is what I upgraded from. I lost quite a bit of the red coloring on some of my corals...still not bad, but the blues got much more intense.

I think it is the big spike at 450 nm that contributes to a lot of what you see. It is a very similar spike to the radium bulbs. HTH.

Not sure the 450 nm is it. If that were true than any 20k lamp would produce the same result. I'm wondering if it's related to the other spikes. Like the red one.

The Coralvue Reeflux 10000K is a rather interesting lamp, which should have a more appealing look given that it has the large spike at 452 nm which is typical of the “20000K” lamps but has additional peaks at 534, 588 and 670 nm which should help in “whitening” the appearance of the lamp.

seems supernatural to me

Well it's not just the bulbs... water quality, feeding, flow, export, all play important roles and then, of course, there's

the reefer :lol2:

I have started using the 400W 20K coralview bulbs. They seem to turn blues to bright green in my tank. The appearance of the sand is remarkably white but you really notice the difference in the coral colors. Who else has tried these bulbs? What did you think about them long term? I have only had them up for a month now.

really?.... so thats what i have been doing wrong ;)

I can't tell if you were saying my pic looked supernatural as in faked, or just not natural... either way the pic is unaltered and I have many, many more that show the same exact coloration :)

It's something I'm quite proud of and while I'm not gonna get a TOTM with my little 46bow... you don't have to put my corals or photos down...

here's another example with the ORA Scripps [r] and Chips [l].

quite defensive arent we?

i didnt put anything down, you've made that assumption on your own.

i think the radiant blues are very eye-catching. i am not quite sure that mother nature offers the same, but i dont think poorly of you or your tank for such color renditions if such is the goal of your system (and again, not saying such goals are bad).

it's like the japanese tanks with their colored spotlight bulbs. i have tons of respect for those systems and they are very beautiful... but personally, i am not ordering any spotlights anytime soon :)

That's unfortunate... because I assure you she does and perhaps one day you'll have some in your tank :lol2: Some guys TOTM is a wonderful thing... other's it's the worst thing that could happen to them

i dont know why this argument/p-issing match even exists... nor do i know why you've targeted me for such comments

i am sorry you are so offended. the above picture you posted of your corals is indeed very nice

i am sorry you do not feel that such honors bestowed upon me are warranted, you will have to take that up with the powers that be.

i will simply now leave this forum with good bye, good luck, and "happy reefing"

I don't think you get an actual color shift in the coral (although there may be some small amount over time. You see the results as soon as you put a fresh set of lights in.

PUGroyale's comments on all the other factors affecting coral color can't be disregarded. Crappy looking corals from bad conditions are bound to look "crappy" under the RF 10k's. It's a cool bulb ... not a miracle worker.

PatrickJ: There's no place like home!

As far as the OT ****ing contest is concerned, I actually think it brings up some good points. I was kinda thinking about the whole Japanese tank comparison myself. Don't get me wrong, I also think those are extremely healthy excellent tanks that anyone would/should be proud of, but I do think the various color'd spotlights are to some extent ... cheating (JMO).

I came to the conclusion that using the RF10k is not in the same category. We're just talking about one color (blue) and many reefers are already working for the same result by supplementing with actinics or using 10 and 10+ kelvin halides. This bulb just does a better job of it IMO (for at least a couple months anyway:D ). I think the only reefers who could "take the high road" on this one would be those who in the 6.5k only club.

With all bulbs, there are some obvious downsides that come with the good. For instance, I find it very difficult to get purples to show up very well under these (unless it's a deep dark purple) and reds don't seem to show up as well. Probably because of the pink hue that some people see throughout the tank (water rocks, etc)

Back to the topic, someone said the effect, insane blue, was temporary. Is this true? Do the corals turn blue from brown and then just fade back?

BEEN RUNNING 2-400W RF 10K AND 1-400W RF 12K ON PFO HQI BALLAST'S IN MY 450 . HERE IS

Kip...

Dude, whatever...

Some of us are having a nice discussion on CV lamps and you chime in with nothing to add to the thread but to call my photo into question. I'm a little offended but I play it off with a little humor with the Superman post... no harm no foul, right? Then you have the nerve to come back with... "i don't think poorly of you or your tank for such color renditions if such is the goal of your system" Well... gee thanks, I really appreciate that  Don't you think it comes off as a little condescending? BTW I never said your tank wasn't worthy of the TOTM honor ;) Peace and happy reefing to you too...

Back on topic: I've had no trouble keeping my "supernatural" :D blues consistant...

mwood: The effect is temporary but the remainder of the bulb life is really quite good also. Easily as good as any other 10k that I've seen. I'm at 9 months with my current lights and they are holding up well.

KEEPERZ: Those purples look pretty good. Have you ever found that corals that you've bought as light purple or purple/blue tend to have more of a blue appearance under the 10k's? My coralline has the deep purple look, but marginally purple corals take on a blue look. Maybe it's all my vho's contributing too.

How do your blues look at 9 months?
