Due to a recent redbug outbreak, I need to treat my tank with Interceptor. I ordered from an online site and received Interceptor Spectrum which contains 23 mg of milbemycin oxime and 228 mg of praziquantel. I am concerned that the praziquantel might harm corals or other inverts and am looking for other users experience with this med combo. Thanks!

Praziquantel is active against trematodes and cestodes, its a good fish debugger :). Im not so sure about the whole coral deal. I would try it out first with a little frag of something in a separate container and see if the coral dies. The interceptor will kill mites, larval and adult stages of nematodes and dirofilaria immitis...which is heartworms.

The only reason I know this is because I work at a vet hospital and I got the low down on these two drugs :).

I realize this is an old thread I just revived. Hoping someone has tried it. I just picked some up from an online pharmacy.

I have used it twice now without having any issues with my inverts or fish. Red bugs are dead and gone!

Excellent. Just concerned now because I ordered from a Canadian Online Pharmacy. Hopefully it gets here soon without having my credit card info stolen, etc!

Keep in mind that Interceptor Spectrum and Interceptor are completely different products. Interceptor does not contain any Praziquanel. Interceptor Spectrum seems to be a combination drug, for treating Dog Heart worm AND Tape worms.

The only active ingredient, in Interceptor, is Milbemycin Oxime. Milbemycin Oxime is what kills Red Bugs.

As for Praziquanel, it's been used, effectively, against Red Planaria Flatworms.

Praziquantel is the active ingredient in Prazipro. I use Prazipro routinely to dip acros. It kills flatworms dead. Personally I wouldn't use it as an in tank treatment because I don't know about the long term effects. However it hasn't had any negative effects on dipped acros even when mixing extremely strong doses.

Sounds like it's the perfect dip for new arivals. Too bad it's not licensed in the US. I'm going to see if our Novartis rep can get me some anyway.

On a side note, I informed our rep of the use of Interceptor for red bug, at a meeting last year. I have recently been told that they are working on an aquatics division.

I wouldn't think that the Praziquantel would be an issue. Many people have stated using Prazi Pro as an in tank treatment for flukes with no effect on corals. The active ingredient in Prazi Pro is Praziquantel.
