I was just wondering which of the two overflows works better, my tank already has sand, rock, and water in it however i drained about 15 gallons because i had to redo alittle plumbing but i would like to put a overflow in the tank. And i dont want to remove everything from the tank. Would the top box work nearly as well?

The first pic would work if the tank is drilled at the top, but depending on the actual size of the overflow box, the drain size you want might be too much for the overflow to handle.
Just make sure you know how much GPH you want going thru the drain and that the overflow will be able to feed it.

The top one would be even better if you extended it farther accros the back. That is what Anthony C. advocated to skim a large amount of just the thin top layer.
