Introducing a mate to a two-year old male?

I have a two year old male ,yellow hippocampus reidi, and I want to introduce a female to it. I know that this male has had fry before will they still move on to another mate? I have heard that they are very loyal.

Would I be risking upsetting him too much?

This will not be a problem at all. This species are not monogamous.

He is suppose to be yellow. You wouldn't have any idea why his color is not there anymore do you? Do they fade with age? Or is he not getting the correct diet or water quality?

I have also heard they will turn the color of their surroundings.

All seahorses can and do change colors for a variety of reasons. Many will simply change to blend in with their surroundings.

If there is a problem with water quality or they are ill some will turn dark or black until the problem is corrected.
