introducing my 870gal tank (pics ahead)

please don't tease us :D ? great job as always, green slimer is growing like weeds. so who gets to sit on the chair

Thank you very much for your kind words.

The "brain" in the middle of the tank is now about 15" in diameter and doubled it's height in the last year. It's getting spheric, like it should.
Well, seems that the tank has a bigger one than myself ;-).

I never thought, that SPS can grow so quick, that I have to prune them each other month to keep enough free water for the fishes.

This has always been one of my favorite tanks. Great updates Ralf. I travel to Erlangen often and would love to see this tank in person 1 day. I have photos saved of your build. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful tank..

Erlangen is about 5 hours away if traveling by car, but I guess living in a
big country (like you do) puts that into another perspective.
I travel a lot, too, so drop me a mail, before you start driving ;-)

Ralf, your tank always amazes me. Even from a short amount of time, your tank has changed and filled in even more. I guess its expected when you have more areas to grow from than just 1 or 2 branches. Do you have a video of your aquarium? Would love to see it if you do.

Hi again,

hmm, a video would be nice, yes.
A year ago I tried to make one, but had to discover that I should stick to gardening coral.
Tottering pictures and inappropiate cuts were the only results :-(.

Given that all the added CaCl2*2H2O (the Calcium additive) is converted to coral skeleton
and there would be no dropouts, the system produces about 75 kilos (165 pound) skeleton a year.
Don't know if I can trust that number. There have to be dropouts and other (smaller) Calcium consumer. But even so, thats an ugly lot.

Thanks,
Ralf

Wow, looking good. What is your daily calcium chloride and Na Bic usage with so much SPS? I was all for the balling method until I had a closer look at the price of the chemicals

dn100,

currently I use:
CaCl2*2H2O - about 320g a day
MgCl2*6H2O - about 40g a day
NaHCO3 - about 350g a day
NaCl-free Salt - about 100g a day

I buy the chemicals in 25kg sacks (pharma-grade) with cost of about 3-4 Euros a kg (4.4 - 5.9 US$)
in CaCl2*2H2O that means 1 Euro (1.5 US$) a day.

i can never get tired of this, wow truly amazing how much media is used to keep this baby in tip top shape. if your frag tank is runing out of space, you can always pm me :D

:D

guess you beat me to it, maybe next time :D. on an average how long do you spend a day on the display, feeding, maintenance and etc.? how old is your setup again?

I filled the tank with water in september 2005.
Some coral and fish came from my previous system.

The maintenance isn't that time consuming, feeding twice a day and looking at the
animals is all I do during the week. Friday is my tank day, there I spent about 2 hours
with cleaning filters, skimmer, waterchange, watermakeup.
Each other week I make up new chemicals etc.
Other tasks like make cuttings, clean pumps, new bulbs etc. are also done on that
Fridays within the 2 hours.
It pays off, to have pumps for waterchange in/out etc. etc. ;-)

Actually I set up a second one beside the first :-P
Ralf

We definitely have to see that too...

Truly an amazing set-up... I have been a member for several months now and never posted. You're tank has made me feel obligated to acknowledge it's prestige.

RalfP,

Das ist sher shern. Forgive my spelling it's been a while since I had German in school. Oh I really need to win the lottery so I can do the same.
