Introduction and questions

Just rinse it through some clean water and make sure you get as much junk out as you can. You can also ditch the sponge and go with some filter floss or filter pads and replace them as needed.

It will fit, don't know if you checked out the video for the media basket:

Lol and no, I don't receive any commission from inTank or are in any way affiliated with them.

Yeah we have the skimmer, and what we actually found is that the Tunze 9002 actually has to go in the center chamber (wont fit in the other side compartments). This means of course we would have to remove the media chamber as some people with the 28 gallon nano seem to have done. Is this advisable?

Otherwise the tank is great. The cleanup crew is active and working hard. Our green star polyps are thriving. Only the zoa frag refuses to open. I suppose it was harassed a bit as we moved its location a few times and even dipped it to make sure there werent any pests.

We are really anxious to add fish, possibly a pair of clowns.

If thats the only place where the skimmer fits than you have no other option. Many people don't run any chemical filtration, which is what the media chamber holds, so you should be fine. Just watch your bio-load, feeding amount and keep up with the water changes.

I returned the Tunze for that very reason. I'm waiting on an AquaMaxx HOB-1. Read a lot of good reviews and it will fit in the third chamber. It will fit as is and with some minor adjustments, it can fit and allow you to open the hood all the way. There's a very good thread in the nano cube section with how to do that. If you get that skimmer, I'll point you to it.

Thanks folks! There have been a few updates. We did some aqua-scaping with the live rock, added a mushroom coral frag, and drum-roll.... two clowns! They are the standard orange clownfish. We didnt QT them, but followed a strict acclimation guide and so far they are doing fantastic.

As for the protein skimmer, we havent put it in yet. But I am leaning towards removing the media basket and putting the Tunze in the center chamber. I know it wont be as effective, but can I drop the little bag from the media chamber into one of the side panels?

Will have to take some photos soon.

Would appreciate if somebody could chime in regarding the following:

We are going away for 2 days for the holiday this weekend. We will be able to feed the clowns early Saturday morning, and will be back late Sunday night.

Is there something in particular we should feed to hold them over? We are currently using pellets, and Ive read mysis is very popular.

What should we do in terms of lighting? In addition to the 2 new clowns we also have 3 frags: green star polyp, a mushroom, and a zoanthid. We have the 28g JBJ Nano, with 2 light settings but nothing as far as a timer or anything like that.

If your just feeing pellets, look into an auto feeder.

Lighting should be set on timers so you should have to mess with the lights. Since you dont have timers, go get some. Its cheap and makes lighting automated

Your clowns will be fine in that time span, no worries.

If you can't pick up some timers then your corals will also be fine without any lightning while you are away.

We are definitely going to get the timers for lighting. Will make our lives easier and keep a more regular schedule in the tank. I saw there are some expensive timers out there (Apex I think?) that come with many features, and some that are much simpler.

By the way, we came back to a very healthy and happy tank last night.

Thanks Haks, we will go with the simple timer you mentioned. Glad we wont have to shell out big bucks for something like Apex.

I think we will also return the Tunze and try for the Aquamaxx HOB-1.
