Hi all,
I'm having a problem with a few types of red algae.Through searching the algae page i think i have them identified as a few Gracilaria (sp) and Galaxaura (sp) im want to know if there is anyway to rid my DT of this algae via fish, inverts.......
TIA

Gracilaria is supposed to be quite palatable to fish and humans. It can be used for nutrient export. You could yank out clumps and sell it to people or your LFS. I hear that tangs love the stuff. It does well with lots of water movement.

Galaxaura is an ornamental, heavily calcified rhodophyte. You could probably sell this one too. In fact I would appreciate some! Does best with temperate water flow and moderate to bright light.

I have some what i belive to be Solieria robusta as well.As far as the Galaxaura is concerned you may have some if you like.I have it growing in refugium and display.Ill take some more photos today on the Solieria robusta.

It's hard to tell, this is what i found on algae database
http://www.algaebase.org/search/species/detail/?species_id=2824

and this
http://www.corallium.net/images/bob_goemans/algues/Srobusta.jpg

from your picture its difficult to get a clear picture of the branching and growing pattern, not that I can really determine it from the references i found anyhow! it does appear to be a red algae, it sort of looks like ochtodes, which does come in blue-purpleish colours. But I may be biased since I've been searching for ochtodes for quite some time. from the second picture it really looks similar.
here is a picture of it

Recently I read that sea urchins are great consumers of algae, even calcified ones.

To be honest I would like a little bit of all of them! =)

Ah, sorry, no frags here =)
but I do have a little money that could go towards shipping. Any idea how much that would cost?

i have no idea ...My zip is 60451 .Find out how much and who you want to ship with and ill happily send you some of all the different algae i have.

I know online stores ship algae just like coral and fish; do you think algae would survive to NY without such costly measures?

Ok, how about this....... put the algae wrapped in several paper towels (wet) into a few ziplock backs, into a bubble envelop, and then into a Priority Mail Flat-Rate Envelope?

the postage itself costs 4.60 and would take 2 days to get here. and i could give you a little something for your handling fees and time =)
