Inverts in hyposalinity

I have a QT tank that I keep the salinity 1.017 to 1.019

Is it safe to put shrimp, snails, or crabs in this QT or do they require the normal 1.022-1.023 range?

I highly doubt the inverts would make it in there, especially for a long period of time. They need around 1.023-1.026 in the salinety range. I have never tried this since I removed the inverts when I had to hypo. Unless someone has successfully done this I wouldnt try it.

Crabs could probably survive, but snails and shrimp are less likely to make it.

By the way, that lower salinity (1.017 to 1.019) is not low enough to treat marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans).

1.009 is what I'd use. Gradually lower the salinity over about two days, leave it at 1.009 for six weeks, then raise it to 1.024-6 (NSW level or whatever you usually keep your tank at) over about five days to a week. Fish can go into hypo faster than they can adjust to coming out, at least according to what I've read.

Shelled creatures, crustaceans, snails, etc, cannot 'sweat' and they don't throw up outstandingly well either. Consequently when the water changes salinity rapidly, they don't cope, and their tissues take damage. They may live for 3 days or so, but will die of it.
