okay i dont have much experience with this ,my friend has a 120gal tank with a 75 fuge with no skimmer and her tank is judt full of soft corals .
heres what's in the tank lg basketball sized finger leather, football sized toadstool, and then she had about 40 corals consisting of finger corals ,nepthia on softball sized rock, colt corals, carnation corals,a few mushroom rocks, three or four large clove polyp colonies and the list goes on too. the whole tank is VERY PACKED to say the least as you really cant see any live rock in the tank because it is all covered with corals . there is aprox. 100lbs of live rock in the tank .heres the question ,how much iodine do you think should be needed as supplimentation per day/week ? right now she is putting two drops of lugols in per day at least 5 days per week and with a salifert test kit there is no detectable iodine when tested . just wondering if the test kit may be bad or if she really needs much more iodine .the salifert test kit is brand new and i also used my "older" test kit which also came up with no iodine .how much iodine do you use in a similar set up ? please let me know what you think and thanks

I have a 120g as well and i add 6 drops of lugols once a week. I never test for iodine. On my kids 30 gal i add 2 drops a week and people tell me thats why the xenias pump so much. If everything looks good and water changes are done at least monthly everything gets replenished.

Sorry! :lmao:
I find it easier to link to that, saying it myself usually leads to arguments, even in my own home. You should be able to scan until you get to the main point, I always do.

A general rule of thumb is one ml per 25 gals per month for a normal load. If I am not mistaken ( which means you better check) 5 drops = one ml

One thing for sure is skimming will definitly pull iodine from the water. The bigger the skimmer the bigger the pull on iodine. Generally when I dose iodine I stop skimming for 8 hours. This gives the corals, shrimp, and crabs time to infuse.

Another way to tell if there is adequate levels of iodine is to monitor to see if your shrimp and certian crab species are molting regularly. if not then your probably low...

I do not use Iodine, since after you do a water change it gets restored to its original form.

I have mushrooms, polyps, and xenias, and they all grow EVERY WEEK!!!

With no Iodine, besides it is easy to overdose that in a tank!
