Whats the advantages of dipping zoos in Iodine ?

Generally you dip the zoanthids in a freshwater bath that contains lugols iodine.
The freshwater is to kill the nudibrachs or sea-spiders and I always figured the iodine was to use as a antiseptic for any damage done to the zoanthids either by a pest or damage in shipping.
