well the ballast that runs two of the halides fried yesterday so we are going to replace it with two 250's since the bulbs need to be replaced anyways. But I think I found out what is really wrongwith the tank. The bonehead that installed the tank in the house used a brass nipple to feed the Calcium Reactor off of the main pump. Ofter doing some reading I realize that this could be really bad, especially since it has been in there for a year now. I am going to remove it soon and replumb the reactor so that it is no longer an issue. Then I will do several 50% water changes and put in some poly filter and some Kent toxic metal sponge. Any other ideas here?

The Brass in itself should not be a big issue if was only a simple nipple. Copper is much more toxic then brass and look at how most homes are plumbed today with only copper pipes. Yes this is one of the many reasons most of us use DI or RO systems but still there must be some gradual build up as no filteration system is 100%. Even take a filter that clears up 99% of the copper in 20 water changes you have 20% of the copper that got through.

yes your points are valid, but how about corrosive saltwater running through a brass fitting 24 hours a day for one year. Freshwater is nowhere near as corrosive as saltwater.

Do you run carbon on that system?

Consider also too much flow, or too much linear flow

I was going to put some carbon in it, but we are changing the bulbs next week so I did not want to clear the water too much befor changing the bulbs. I will let the corals adjust to the new bulbs before getting the water too clear. This might not sound like I mean it to but I think you understand.

The flow is decent. Not as I would have designed it. I think the amount is sufficient. 4 locline lines coming in the back coming off of a cascade pro pump. A seaswirl or something would be nice. but I don't think this is the issue.
