Is 80 TDS acceptable??

For the last 18 months I've been getting the RODI from my LFS. The TDS readings were in single digits. Recently, that number went up to 80. The LFS guy says that's quite OK . . . even though the price went up from $.30 to 35/gal.
Am I wrong to think that TDS of 85 is way too high to start with?
I think that he is full of s**t and it trying to rip me off.
Is it time for my own RODI filter?

Once I get to about 5 I order a new set of filters so I think 80 is really high. I'll bet there are areas where 80 comes right out of the tap. Just the convenience of not having to lug water jugs is worth the investment of a RO/DI.

it might be okay but I wouldn't buy it. get your own RODI, it was the best purchase I made for my reef (and my back). I also use it for drinking water, if that sways you at all.

It is not, as a matter of fact if you are paying for it than 1 tds is not acceptable. As soon as my TDS shows 1 I am changing my DI.

The water out of my tap is less than 80, though to be fair I have really clean water here.

If it is 80 TDS for the RO/DI then yes the guy is feeding you a line and it is time to get your own RO/DI or find another source. The RO/DI should be zero

80 TDS for RO/DI water? Not acceptable. Tap water can range 40-600 which is actually acceptable range. usually the higher TDS is from well water in which has a ton of Iron in it. My tap water is 493 and my source is well water.

jumping in with others here- no way is 80 acceptable, unless you're buying it for drinking purposes :)

Ew gross. If it's 80 coming out of the RODI who knows what their plumbing is adding to the water. Like someone else said, in a lot of places tap is less than 80.

TDS can't tell you is the water is acceptable or not. It CAN tell you that his filters aren't working as they should. But whether or not the water is acceptable depends on what there's 80ppm of in there.

As an analogy... Is it safe to leave my car unlocked when there are 0 people around? Sure, nobody around to break into it. Is it safe to leave my car unlocked when there are 80 people around? It depends. If it's 80 criminals then no. If it's 80 good cops then it's probably OK. Alone the number of people around tells me nothing about the safety unless I know WHO they are. Same with TDS. The 80ppm tells you nothing about the suitability of the water unless you know exactly what the contaminates are.

I get not owing your own RODI for whatever reason. But before I owned my own I bought my water. My rule, if I am buying TDS should be zero but I will take up to 7. If I making at home I take up to 10-12. There is no way I would pay for 10 or higher.
