Is a clam possible?

I have a 10g with a powerquad on it which is 1x96 watts. I wanted to know if I could reasonably put a clam in there with the lighting. I know some clams need more lighting than others so to speak. Can someone help me answer this question?

You MIGHT be able to get away with a Squamosa or Derasa, but both of those will quickly outgrow your tank. They can easily reach the size of a football...

BTW, do you go to FSU?

Mike

I wouldn't do it....clams demand very stable water params and chemistry. Since that light is only good for the larger clams, they would put a mighty big demand on your system. If you really, really, really want one, try a small Hippopus clam.

Please don't try a clam with those lights. Try this correlation - add a clam to your tank and at the same time YOU must only eat lettuce - let's see who lasts longer. I'm sorry this is not a flame but clams are magnificent creatures who require maximum photo periods. I have to run my dual 400w Metal Halides for 13 hours daily to approximate natural sunlight and my Crocreas (who are 4" from the top of the water and only 12" from the lights) love it.

I thought squamosa clams where low light and could handle PC lighting?? Im not saying they would do as good as they would under MH but I couldnt compare it to us eating lettuce???

have you ever kept a squamosa? my LFS has a large 8" one under a 150 watt MH in a 75 gal for a long long time. I dont know how to compare a 96watt PC at a few inches to a 150 watt MH at probably 20+ inches but it seems to me that it would be similar intensity.

Your 150W MH at 20 " is quite sufficient for a Squamosa (11+ hours daily) but does not compare to a 96 W Powerquad.

Last word goes to you - I'm done with my advice to Mobius.

I had a 4 inch Squamosa right under 130 watts of 10k PCs and 2x32 actinics in a tiny little 15 gallon tank. Even then he didn't grow....I would say it was likt the lettuce thing. I ditched all those worthless PCs and bought a used 175 watt MH pendant (only $100).....all of the suden, boom, he took off growing, looked much better than before, etc.

Stick with softies and LPS, etc for your tank and lights....you can have a really sweet tank with those, just stock accordingly!

Peabody---- I totally agree.. I had a squamossa and a hippo under about 7-8watts bet gallon of PC. They lived and I thought they were happy, but when I upgraded to MH, It was a world of difference. The perked up alot, extended their mantles more and just looked alot healthier. The squa which didnt grow at all under the PCs grew almost 1/4in in the first three weeks the MH was on.

mobius9oo--- I wouldnt do it if I were you... will a clam stay alive for a while in your system? If your water quality is perfect and unchanging it will live(i use the term "live" loosly). Will it be happy? most likely not. Do whats best for the clam, not whats best for you...

-----"How quickly do they grow. Will they actually grow that quickly under PC's opposed to MH's."-----

They never grew under my PCs. If they are not growing, they are not happy and healthy... JMO

I have a similar situation, but my 10g is going to have a 70w 10kk MH and 36w PC actinic. Would this be enough for a clam? Also, assuming a clam would be ok under that light, how long would it take for it to grow too big for the tank(~8")? It would probably be at least a few months before I add the clam, and I'll more than likely be upgrading to at least a 30g in a year and a half. Thanks.

Jon

If you have a 70 watt MH you could keep anything in a 10 gallon provided the rest of the tank's parameters are appropriate. You could even get a maxima or crocea, just make sure salinity and temp are rock steady, and CA/ALK is kept up. Good luck!!

Thanks Peabody, I was hoping I'd be able to keep crocea's, since the stay small. I'll probably start with some easier sps's before I venture into clams :) I have most of what I need to start up the tank, hopefully I can have it up this weekend. Most of the rock/sand will come from my 5.5 gallon.
