Is a closed loop best option for flow in a tall 480?

I picked up a nice acrylic 480 gallon tank.

Here is the first issue, it is 4 ft tall! The sided are 1 1/4 inch thick.

I am thinking about drilling several strategically placed holes & using a closed loop for flow.

I may try to do a gyre effect and flow in around the tank. Then every couple of hours, reverse it so it flows the opposite way.

Probably going to line up some Hydra 52's at the top, and try to keep mostly LPS in it.

Depends on why you're asking. If you are concerned about magnetic mounted power heads on a 1.25" thick acrylic tank you can create alternate mounts on thinner acrylic strips and drop these down into the tank. If, on the other hand, you prefer to hide your circulation pumps then a closed loop is the way to go.

I would of liked to use the Gyre pumps if I can figure out a way to mount them inside.

Can you elaborate more about how to mount something like that?

I haven't had my mitts on a gyre pump yet, but pumps that connect on the side pane of the tank with a magnet are usually only good up to half-inch thick glass. If you had a 3" wide strip of 3/8" acrylic and about three foot long you could hang your powerhead off that (providing the outer magnet end is water-proof, of course).
