Is epoxy paint for swimming pools, safe for a plywood aquarium?

I know that there is a generic for Pond Armour, which is a koi pond epoxy, but I am not sure which one it is. Most regular 2 part pool paints need the chlorine content to keep them from oxidizing and flaking apart.

Some of the epoxy pool paints are likely suitable, but some brands may contain anti-bacterial agents and/or UV inhibitors that may not be safe. You need to carefuly read the label and MSDS.

You can spray it on but not with a standard HVLP gun, the viscocity is far too high. You need a plural component piston sprayer... you are better off just brushing it on.

MSDS = Material Safety Data Sheet

Basically a fact sheet of how this substance can hurt you, animals and the environment... be sure to get data on the cured substance.... cause more than likely, the most common MSDS you find will be for the uncured epoxy mixture... the two will have different characteristics

I have yet to see an epoxy based pool paint with a mold inhibitor in them, but some do have UV protection in them.

I've used them many times succesfully without harm to the inhabitants. Our local aquarium here purchases paint from our swimming pool supply store to paint their show tanks with their Dolphins and other mammals.

Thank you guys for your answers! As for the airless spray guns,I have found an article on the Internet, which says they are good for painting using paints of high viscosity, thus they must be able to spray epoxy paint.

Henry... the airless spray gun is not going to work and will be useless when you are done trying :)

As I mentioned, a piston based pump will need to be used. If you use a single piston pump, you will likeluy not be able to clean it when you are done. A plural piston pump is what we use :)

Henry...

the "airless spray guns" they are talking about ARE tied to piston based pumps. GRACO and BINKS are the two big names.

As I mentioned, the 2-part epoxy paint will be nearly impossible to clean out of a single piston unit. That is why we use plural piston units and a static mixer in 2-part epoxy spraying applications.

I say "we" because I have pumped literaly millions of pounds of single and plural component polyurethanes and epoxies :)

You can buy or rent LITTLE single component BINKS and GRACO pumps at Home Depot and Lowes stores here in the US. They are electric with a sinlge short stroke piston and cost $400-$1000

This is a very popular paint with the wooden tank builders.

Please be aware that that paint alone, is a very poor way to waterproof a tank. Just not enough film thickness to be very durable.

I am building a tank right now and I would be interested in the best way to apply it to get it down without brush marks.

I have seen where people thin epoxy with denatured alcohol, but do not know if it is feasible with this paint.

Bean?
