Hello all,

I might have the opportunity to buy 80 LBS of live rock uncured to start my tank friday. I was wondering if it's the best way that start the cycle? I heard that sometimes it might cause problem after 2-3 years.

thanks

i think it is the best way to start the cycle. never heard about the prob. later on. what kinds of problems did you hear about?

I've never heard of any problem associated with it either. If you do some reading here, I think a lot of folks set thier tanks up this way. The downside (if you want to call it that) is the time associated with the curing and cycle once it's in the tank.

One issue you might have could be the fact that sometimes curing the rock can create some refuse in the tank. I've read of some people curing the rock for a period of time on eggcrate in the tank, then swapping the rock out to a holding area, cleaning the tank, and then doing the final aquascaping.

For my 75 and my nano, I bought rock that was either pre-cured or in another reefers tank. I am currently curing about 25 lbs in a rubbermaid bin for my brother's tank and I've noticed that when I cahnge the water there is a fair amount of chum at the bottom of the container each time.

I havent heard of any problems with it. The few disadvantages i could think of would be all the waste material from the die off that you will experience, and the smell, which can be rather bad. I would say that a good option to combat those two issues would be to do the inital part of the curing process in tubs like most people suggest, then after a while add it to the tank after the worst is over, but before it is fully cured. Im kinda new to this but thats the most logical way to have the best of both sides of it.

No problems. Just periodically (with water changes) take the rock out for scrubbing dead matter, and flush the same dead gunk out of pores and holes with a turkey baster.

Run skimmer wet, siphone out junk that comes out of rocks, also keep lights to a minimum during cure/cycle.

Good luck!
