Is it ick or is it velvet?

What is the big difference between the two just so I know what i'm dealing with? I want to make sure I'm using the right method.

Ich looks is white spots and looks like grains of salt stuck to the body. Velvet looks like a very fine powder on the fish and gives them almost a sheen.

I have a wrasse that just came in through a club buy that is sick with something. I think it is velvet but the coating comes in patches on his body and fins, even his eyes. What should I do for treatment?

For velvet or ich the treatment options are copper or hypo from what I have been researching. Each one seems to have their pros and cons. Which ever you pick remember to do water changes, check PH, copper if using it, and alk. Make sure to treat outside of the display tank. I still haven't decided which treatment method i'm going to do. Some people say hyposalinity, but if you don't monitor it correctly and keep it at the right range it's not effective. If you use copper you have to watch other parameters because they can make the copper very toxic.

If you treat with hypo and the fish keep dying, chances are it was velvet :D

Hypo is an effective treatment for ich, but not for velvet, you need to use a copper-based med like Cupramine for the latter.
