Is it possible to get an underwater camera with some quality for $200 or less US?

Just wondering if there is an underwater camera setup out there that takes much better pictures then those disposable cameras for $200 or less.

I am going to be snorkeling off of Keywest this summer and would love to capture some memories.

I think anything that is more than one of those disposable cameras in a cheap housing is going to run more like $400 or so for new. Do you have a camera now? If so, you might be able to get housing for it. Some of the digital cameras have housings available in that price range. Check out B & H Photo, they have a good selection and good prices on photo gear, including UW stuff.

Hi and thanks for responding. Yeah I have an old clunky Nikon 2500 2megapixels. I saw they make a baggie type thing for it, but I think it only works up to 10 feet, which I think I may go past that depth. Also the camera has a very slow focusing system which does not take hi-speed pictures so all those moving fish would be blurs.

Well do you think I might be able to get a setup off ebay for around that price and if so which one should I look out for.

Bonica and Sealife are two popular digital set ups for UW that could probably be found used in your price range. If you get lucky, you might find someone selling a nikon, olympus or cannon with housing cheap. BTW when shooting film, I'm usually using a shutter speed of only 30 or 60. The flash helps stop the motion ;)

Thanks man! Hows the waters off New York? Find anything cool lately? I saw your post in the colwater reefs thread.

Well I got a hook up on a Canon A640 today so Im going to be using that and I will try and get a Underwater housing for it. I saw the Canon one made for it on ebay for $169.95 buy it now, but that seem pretty high for just the case.

For ebay that is steep. You can buy direct from B & H for that price, and know your dealing with a reputable company.

Yeah I found out that through froogle.com I found a place ranked very highly that has it for 159.99 plus 4.99 shipping.

The A640 is a good camera from what I hear.

Thanks.

I haven't played with that particular set up. Best thing to do is try it out as is and see how you feel. If they sell weights for it, it is likely positively buoyant and will float to the top if you let go. Some people like that, some like neutral or slightly negative.
